Registration Open for STEM Workshop, Girls Grades 6-8

Joliet Junior College was recently awarded an E2 Energy to Educate grant from Constellation, an Exelon Company. This grant will provide JJC’s Corporate & Community Services with an opportunity to enhance its innovative solar power energy program for girls in grades 6 to 8.

Girls Leading the Charge 2.0 is a STEM-focused challenge that will build upon concepts that were introduced in the initial program. Students were able to design and build solar powered cars while exploring solar/photovoltaic (PV) cells as well as gear drive and pulley systems.

In the GLTC 2.0 program, girls will participate in hands-on activities while applying design and troubleshooting techniques used by engineers. They will enjoy learning in a team-oriented environment as they continue to increase their knowledge and skills in solar power energy and engineering.

JJC has added an innovative component to the curriculum that will introduce students to hydrocar fuel cell cars. These vehicles are powered by a clean-energy fuel cell that converts hydrogen gas to electricity and water. Girls will utilize advanced-level, model car kits to discover this futuristic technology and the potential it has to revolutionize the transportation industry.
