What Will I Learn?
The Fire Science Technology program at JJC is designed to teach students fire protection fundamentals and prepare them for entry level positions in the fire service industry. With the increasing complexity of technology in the industry, it is necessary for fire protection personnel to acquire specialized knowledge and problem-solving skills to meet modern-day challenges. Our program can also benefit current fire professionals who need to update their skills and industry knowledge.
What is Unique About Our Fire Science Program?
We are recognized by the National Fire Academy for a commitment to the nationally recognized Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) model of standardized professional development education criteria. All fire science instructors are currently full-time or retired firefighters with vast experience from every level of the profession. JJC also has an articulation agreement with Southern Illinois University (SIU). All courses taken at JJC will be fully transferrable to SIU’s Fire Service Management Bachelor Degree Program, which is taught at our main campus.
Classes are scheduled to meet the needs of college students and firefighters working various shift assignments. During each semester, classes are offered during the day, afternoons, evenings and weekends. Online and blended courses are available each semester. Fast track classes to certify existing firefighters are also scheduled periodically at area fire departments.
Lastly, the Kim Crawford Memorial Scholarship is available exclusively for JJC Fire Science/EMS students. Students in their second year who have a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale and demonstrate financial need can apply. For more information, visit the JJC Scholarships page.
Certificate evaluation for credit is also available; contact the program advisor at 815.280.2356 for more information.
