Lady Wolves look to finish season strong

With a record of 10-19, the JJC women’s volleyball team is struggling to find momentum with heading into the conclusion of their season.

JJC recently put together a two-game winning streak before dropping matches to Illinois Valley Community College as well as Lincoln College. However, spirits rose following the wins against Waubonsee Community College and Concordia. That was short lived though, with JJC falling into a four game losing streak in which they lost each in straight sets. They have rebounded since with a win against Waubonsee, but fell to College of DuPage. Despite the struggles, head coach, LaKisha Cameron, is noticing positives.

"We are really starting to come together as a team," said Cameron following a loss to Mount Mercy College.

In that contest, the Wolves were led by Amie Hogan with 16 assists and April Veronda who tallied 11 digs.

A bright note on the season has been the play of Hogan. Her play and leadership has impressed Cameron thus far this season. She leads the team with 616 assists. She had a season high 43 against Triton College. Hogan has also contributed a team-high 48 aces.

"She has really been a great leader for our team and stepped up when we needed it," said Cameron.

Verdonda has been handling much of the attack. She leads the team with 263 kills. The sophomore out of Coal City, Ill, contributed a season-high 18 kills against Judson College. She also leads the team with 204 digs, as well.

Freshman Emilee Ziesmer has been the force at the net for the Wolves. She leads the team with 55 blocks.

JJC will wrap up their regular season with games against Madison Area Tech, Moraine Valley, and Rock Valley, including the "Dig Pink" game, which supports the fight against breast cancer. That game will be played on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
