Our Giant Home: The Milky Way Galaxy
Our galaxy is a beautiful spiral galaxy, with its spiral arms in a thin disk. When we look at the night sky our Galaxy appears to us as a band of stars, not a disk. This International Year of Astronomy event will address how we learned that our Galaxy is spiral in structure, how our Galaxy’s size compares to our solar system, our Sun’s location in the Galaxy, the black hole at the center of our Galaxy, "dark matter" in our Galaxy, why the Galaxy has spiral arms, etc. The star projector will be used to see where the band of the Milky Way lies, and where star clusters, nebulae and the galactic center are located. Presented by Dr. Noella D’Cruz, Associate Professor of Astronomy on Nov. 19 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.
