Two Wolves players receive NJCAA All-American Honors

Sophomores Brett Van Asdlen and Zach Petrick have received NJCAA Division III Baseball All-American honors. Van Asdlen was named to the 2nd team, while Petrick was selected to the 3rd team.

Brett Van Asdlen was a transfer from Parkland College and filled the first base position for the Wolves this past season. He had a .371 batting average that included 59 hits, 13 doubles, 3 triples, and 9 home runs. In 159 at bats, he scored 47 runs and had 55 total RBI's. Brett had an amazing 1.000 percent fielding average posting 238 put outs and 11 assists. His field work earned him a spot on the 2010 Rawlings Gold Glove team. This is the second year in a row that a Wolves first baseman has received this prestigious award. He was named as a 1st team All-Region selection and an N4C All-Conference recipient.

Zach Petrick was a key member of the JJC pitching staff this past season. He finished with a 7-4 overall record with a 2.45 ERA. His 86 strikeouts placed him third in all of NJCAA Division III baseball. In 83 innings, he gave up 56 hits, 28 runs, and walked only 26. He was named as a 1st team All-Region selection and an N4C All-Conference recipient. Zach will continue his baseball career at the University of Northwestern Ohio in the fall.

Irizarry receives NJCAA Division III Player of the Week

Sophomore Ernesto Irizarry had a standout week for the Wolves. The catcher hit .706 (12-17) with eight runs, three doubles, one triple, three home runs, ten RBI's, and one walk. On April 13, in a 23-0 victor over Olive-Harvey College, he was just 0-for-1 with one run and one walk. Two days later in an 11-3 victory over Kishwaukee College, Ernesto went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. On April 16, in a 21-9 route of Prairie State College, Irizarry blasted out four hits in four at-bats with three runs, one double, two home runs, and five RBI's. The next day, in a 14-4 victory over Harper College, the 6'0" catcher was at it again going 4-for-5 with one run, two doubles, one home run, and three RBI's. On April 18, against Black Hawk College, Irizzarry went 2-for-4 with one run, one triple, and one RBI.

Belen receives NJCAA Division III Player of the WeekHector Belen

Sophmore first baseman Hector Belen has received NJCAA Division III National Player of the Week honors. On March 23rd against South Suburban College, Belen with 3-for-4 with one run scored. The next day in a win over Waubonsee Community College, he went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and an RBI. Against Rock Valley College in an N4C twinbill, Hector helped the Wolves to two victories with a combined 4-for-8 with four runs, three home runs, and five RBI's. Against Lake County, Belen was 4-for-8 with one run, three doubles, and three RBI's. For the week, Hector hit .464 (13-28) with seven runs, four doubles, three home runs, and nine RBI's.

Alex McCluskey receives Rawlings Gold Glove Award

Former player Alex McCluskey has received
the prestigious Rawlings Gold Glove Award from the 2009 baseball season at Joliet Junior College. Alex had a .990 fielding percentage last season at first base for the Wolves. He had 389 put outs, 22 assists, and only 4 errors in 56 games. Offensively, he had 59 hits and 50 RBI's with a .319 batting average. McCluskey is currently playing baseball at Robert Morris College.

Petrick signs with Northwestern Ohio UniversityZach Petrick Signing

Zach Petrick has signed a letter of intent to continue his baseball career at the University of Northwestern Ohio. Petrick, a right handed pitcher, saw action in 17 games last season with the Wolves. He struck out 96 batters, gave up 62 hits, and walked 28 in his 85 1/3 innings pitched. Zach finished with a 9-4 overall record with a 2.84 ERA. His 96 strikeouts placed him as 3rd in all of NJCAA Division III baseball.

JJC Baseball Ranked #2 in NJCAA Preseason Poll

The Joliet Junior College baseball team has been ranked #2 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national preseason poll. Richland College (TX) sits at the top spot followed by Joliet Junior College. Brookdale Community College (NJ) comes in at #3 followed by Herkimer County Community College (NY), Suffolk County Community College-Selden (NY), Montgomery College-Germantown (MD), Bunker Hill Community College (MA), Eastfield College (TX), Itasca Community College (MN), and College of DuPage (IL).

The 2009 Wolves baseball team finished with a 41-16 overall record last season. They claimed the N4C conference championship, the Region IV championship, and the District B championship on the way to the NJCAA Division III World Series where they finished in fourth place.

Murray signs with Robert Morris University

Patrick Murray, a right handed pitcher, has signed a national letter of intent to continue his baseball career at Robert Morris University. During his freshman season with the Wolves, Pat appeared in 15 games and pitched 64 1/3 innings. He gave up 60 hits, posted 35 strikeouts and 25 walks. He finished with a 5-1 record and a 3.07 ERA. His earned run average was ranked 10th nationally in NJCAA Division III.
