Intensive English for Academic Purposes 

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Joliet Junior College’s Intensive English for Academic Purposes (IEAP) provides academic language instruction for students whose native language is not English to prepare them for further academic study, employment, professional advancement, and personal enrichment.

Courses within the EAP curriculum began in 2010. Currently, the average ENG 101 – English Composition course grade point average is 3.12 for the students who have enrolled after completing at least one of the English for Academic Purposes courses.

ADMISSION
The IEAP is available to all students who complete the admission applicaiton and meet the general admission requirements. Students seeking an F-1 Student Visa must contact the International Student Services Coordinator at dcrabb@jjc.edu or +1-815-280-2262 for further details.

COURSE PLACEMENT
Once a student is offered admission into the program completion of the ACT Compass placement test is required to identify which course level the student should be placed into.

Courses in the IELP are offered in the following topics: American culture, grammar, language laboratory, listening & speaking, reading and writing. All courses are approved by the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB).

COURSE ENROLLMENT
Local immigrant students (not on F-1 Student Visa) can enroll in as few or as many English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes as they choose. However, to be considered in the Intensive English for Academic Purposes (IEAP) program students must be enrolled in a minimum of 18 credit hours at all times.

LEAP CENTER
The LEAP CENTER offers non-native English speakers tutorial assistance in reading, writing, speaking, and grammar skills. The LEAP CENTER can assist students with the following activities:

  • Practicing speaking and listening in one-on-one or small group environments
  • Reading for comprehension
  • Developing vocabulary
  • Understanding and practicing all grammar concepts
  • Understanding cultural concepts encountered in class assignments
  • Reviewing and comprehending course homework assignments
