Academic Skills Center Credentials

It is the Academic Skills Center's mission to actively participate in JJC's overarching mission to promote lifelong learning by adhering to high standards when facilitating course placement, furnishing an appropriate and consistent testing environment, offering effective tutoring, providing courteous customer service, and continuously evaluating and improving upon existing policies and procedures.  To that end, this center strives to attain meaningful certifications and credentials.  Below are brief explanations and helpful links that describe our existing participation in testing and tutoring services and memberships.

Ability-to-Benefit Testing Site - Since 2010

The Academic Skills Center at the Main Campus offers Ability-to-Benefit testing by appointment to eligible students.  Call the Academic Skills Center Manager at 815-280-2824 to learn more.  Ability-to-Benefit testing will end effective July 1, 2012.  Speak with the JJC Financial Aid Department for more information.

ACT COMPASS Internet Testing Site - Since 2009

Working closely with the JJC IT, English, and Math Departments, we offer the Internet version of the ACT COMPASS Placement Test to accurately and efficiently place students into English, math, foreign language, and other classes and programs.  Current testing available at Main Campus, Romeoville Campus, Morris Education Center, and City Center Campus includes math, reading, writing, ESL writing, ESL grammar/usage, and ESL listening.  Click here to learn more about the ACT COMPASS Placement Test.

ACT COMPASS Internet Remote Testing Site - Since 2009

In addition to serving as a testing site for JJC students, we also provide community members with the opportunity to complete ACT COMPASS testing for other institutions at our Main Campus location.  Similarly, JJC students who are not currently residing in the district have the opportunity to complete the JJC ACT COMPASS test at various national and international locations.  Click here to learn more about this option.

CLEP Test Center - Since 2001

CLEP or the College-Level Examination Program offers students the opportunity to prove proficiency within a subject area and potentially earn college credit by completing one or more of their 33 CLEP exams.  Click here to learn more about CLEP Testing.

College Reading and Learning Association's International Tutor Program Certification (CRLA ITPC) - Since 2010

The Academic Skills Center (ASC) has been certified by the CRLA ITPC.  This means that the ASC is authorized to certify its peer and professional tutors who meet the appropriate program requirements for tutor selection, training, experience, and evaluation.  This certification is beneficial to our students in two specific ways.  First, it allows the ASC to provide higher quality tutoring by ensuring all tutors are well trained.  Second, it allows ASC tutors to participate in professional development and earn credentials that will follow them to their transfer institutions and other jobs.  We are producing student employees that are more marketable when they leave JJC.  Click here to learn more about this tutor training program certification.

National Collegiate Testing Association (NCTA) Member - Since 2010

Membership within this organization signifies that we abide by standards and guidelines recognized as best practices among testing centers.  Academic Skills Center staff members in addition to representatives from Romeoville Campus, Morris Education Center, and City Center Campus meet monthly to discuss NCTA's fourteen Standards for Test Centers which include protecting the integrity of the test and evaluating the testing program in an ongoing, systematic, and comprehensive manner.  Click here to learn more about the NCTA Professional Standards and Guidelines for Post-Secondary Test Centers.

SMARTHINKING Tutoring Services Provider - Since 2009

Thanks to a generous collaboration with I-Campus, the Academic Skills Center is able to offer free online tutoring to JJC students.  Through this SMARTHINKING online tutoring program, students are able to schedule a personal session, submit a question or essay and typically expect a response within 24 hours, or connect with an e-structor for live drop-in tutoring.  Click here to learn more about free online tutoring for JJC students.
