For the fifth year in a row, the Joliet Junior College Police Department is participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois’ Cop on a Rooftop fundraising event.
The event, in its sixteenth year, raises money for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities to participate in sports that foster physical fitness, courage, teamwork and friendships.
Each year police departments across the state of Illinois climb the roofs of over 290 Dunkin’ Donuts locations to raise money for the organization.
JJC Patrol Officer Randall Graves has personally participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraising campaign since 1992. Graves loves to participate in the fundraiser because of the difference it makes in the athletes’ lives.
“What I get out of helping Special Olympians is seeing what a difference participating can make for the athlete as well as their family and community. Participating in Special Olympics events builds the athlete’s self-esteem, discipline, motivation and skills all of which carry over to school, home, and the workplace.”
Throughout the years, over $3.9 million has been raised to benefit Special Olympics Illinois from the Cop on a Rooftop event.
Normally this event lands on a day during the college’s summer break. This year the event will be held on a day where the college is open to students. Pete Comanda, JJC Chief of Police, hopes that they will stop by the fundraiser.
“This year for the first time, the Cop on a Rooftop falls on a day when the college is open. We hope that JJC students, faculty and staff will stop by Dunkin’ Donuts on their way in to work to support this great cause and help make this the most successful year yet.”
Stop by any of the participating Dunkin’ Donuts locations on May 18 between 5 a.m. and 12 p.m. to make a donation to this cause.
The JJC Police Department will be on the rooftop of the Dunkin’ Donuts at 1350 Houbolt Road, across from the college’s Main Campus.
