Displaced Homemakers

The displaced homemakers program is for individuals who have worked primarily in the home providing unpaid services to the family who have lost income due to divorce, separation or death of a spouse. The program empowers displaced homemakers to achieve economic efficiency through education, training, and employment.

Assistance is available for tuition, books, childcare, uniforms, mileage and transportation and is open to individuals regardless if they are or are not on public assistance. Benefits such as employment leads, job placement, resume services, mentoring programs, support groups and access to career clothing are also available.

The free Displaced Homemakers Program is state-funded and is designed to help individuals achieve economic self-sufficiency. Funding is available up to an associate of science degree. A series of workshops are also available to help individuals gain self esteem and offer hands-on career exploration prior to vocational training. The workshops are held in two Joliet locations and in Bolingbrook. Through collaboration with state agencies, local women’s groups and other community-based agencies, participants are provided access to all available programs and services.
