Academic Standards of Progress
Academic Standards of Progress
on this page:
Joliet Junior College is committed to academic success. The JJC Academic Standards
of Progress Procedure, initiated in fall 2005*, establishes criteria that constitute
good academic standing and satisfactory academic progress toward attainment of educational
goals. The monitoring and prescribed intervention of academic progress allows for
the identification of students who may need assistance in setting appropriate educational
goals and utilizing resources to achieve academic success.
This is a separate process that applies to all students and is in addition
to the Financial Aid Standards
of Progress.
*Students enrolled at JJC prior to fall 2005 will be exempt from the Academic Standards
of Progress procedures until June 2007.
Academic Standing Categories:
Students who fall below good academic standing will be identified into progressive
categories as follows. The interventions prescribed must result in academic progress
demonstrated by improved GPA. In some cases and at the discretion of the counselor
or adviser, the summer semester can be utilized to demonstrate academic progress.
Academic Caution-Category 1
Students previously in good standing who do not meet the appropriate grade point
average requirement will be placed on Academic Caution. A letter will be mailed
to all students in this category at the end of each semester. Students are responsible
for self-monitoring for academic improvement in this category.
Intervention prescribed: Students on Academic Caution are recommended to limit the
number of hours in which they enroll and to consult with a counselor or adviser
to identify strategies to improve academic performance. Recommendations may include
use of Academic Skills Center services such as free peer tutoring, general academic
assistance, and/or seminars in study skills and time management.
AC notation will appear on student's academic summary.
Academic Probation-Category 2
Students on Academic Caution who do not meet the appropriate grade point average
requirement will be placed on Academic Probation. A letter will be mailed to all
students in this category at the conclusion of the fall and spring terms.
Intervention prescribed: Students on Academic Probation are not guaranteed a full-time
schedule in accordance with Counselor recommendations. Students on Academic Probation
also are required to meet with a counselor or advisor in a workshop and may be required
to enroll in GSD 100. (GSD 100 would be in addition to the number of semester hours
in which the student was allowed to enroll.) Students who have previously registered
for the next academic semester (Fall or Spring) will be notified that failure to
comply with these requirements by a designated deadline will result in withdrawal
from classes for the subsequent semester. Students have the right to appeal their
probation via the Academic Standards Appeal Process (see details below). Computer
restrictions will prevent self-registration through e-resources (online) and touchtone
in this category.
Appropriate registration personnel will have over-ride authority for student schedules
with counselor/adviser approval signatures. AP notation will appear on the student's
academic summary.
Academic Suspension-Category 3
Students on Academic Probation who do not meet the appropriate grade point average
requirement will be placed on Academic Suspension. A letter will be mailed to all
students in this category at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters.
Intervention prescribed: Students on Academic Suspension are prohibited from taking
courses the following spring or fall semester. Students have the right to appeal
their suspensions via the Academic Standards Appeal Process (see details below).
Students returning from a one-semester Academic Suspension are limited to the number
of hours successfully completed or passed with a "D" grade or better, or the number
of courses recommended by the Counselor or Advisor . Course selection will be determined
in the Counseling session. Computer restrictions will prevent self-registration
through e-resources (online) and touchtone in this category.
Appropriate registration personnel will have over-ride authority for student schedules
with counselor/adviser approval signatures. ASP notation will appear on the student's
academic summary.
Academic Dismissal-Category 4
Students who have returned from a one-semester Academic Suspension and again do
not meet the appropriate grade point average requirement will be dismissed for one
academic year. A certified letter will be mailed at the conclusion of fall and spring
semesters to all students in this category at the conclusion of the fall or spring
term.
Intervention prescribed: Students have the right to appeal their dismissal via the
Academic Standards Appeal Process (see details below). After the dismissal period,
students must apply for reinstatement. Computer restrictions will prevent self-registration
through e-resources (online) and touchtone in this category.
Appropriate registration personnel will have over-ride authority for student schedules
with counselor/adviser approval signatures. ADS notation will appear on the student's
academic summary.
Grade Point Average Requirements for Academic Standing Categories
In order to be considered in "good academic standing," grade point averages must
be met according to credit hours earned as described below. In the case where this
does not occur, the categories, notification methods and prescribed interventions
will be progressively applied.
Minimum GPA To Be Considered in Good Academic Standing
- 0-12 Credit Hours Earned: 1.75 Cumulative or 2.0 Semester
- 13-32 Credit Hours Earned: 1.85 Cumulative or 2.0 Semester
- 33-48 Credit Hours Earned: 1.95 Cumulative or 2.0 Semester
- 49 and above Credit Hours Earned: 2.0 Cumulative or Semester
Academic Standards Appeal Process
Students who have been placed on probation, suspended or dismissed for not meeting
the appropriate grade point average requirements may appeal to the Academic Standards
of Progress Appeal Committee.
The appeal committee shall review appeal requests on a case-by-case basis and determine
if a meeting with the student is warranted. Students who choose to appeal must submit
documentation to support the extenuating circumstances that resulted in failure
to meet the appropriate grade point average requirement. Examples of extenuating
circumstances include: death in the family, prolonged hospitalization or serious
illness, and personal crisis (such as divorce or illness of family member).
By the end of the third week following the issuance of the probation, suspension
or dismissal notification letters, the student must complete and submit an academic
standards appeal form. The registrar will serve as the committee facilitator to
coordinate paperwork and committee meeting schedules. The appeal committee will
review the appeal form within 30 days from the issuance of the notification letters.
The committee may ask the student to attend a hearing.
The decision of the appeal committee is final.
