Karen Stewart
Class of 2002
Karen Stewart of Bolingbrook joined the Alumni Board in March 2003. She is currently
enrolled as a full-time student at the University of St. Francis where she is pursuing
a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education.
Karen came to Joliet Junior College in 1998 with the intent of receiving a Certificate
of Achievement as a Teacher's Assistant. After achieving this goal in May 2001,
Karen was encouraged by her sense of success, and she decided to pursue an associate's
degree in order to continue the study of education at the undergraduate level.
In May 2002, Karen realized her dream as she graduated from JJC with an Associate
of Arts degree and a 4.0 grade point average.
While at JJC, Karen was selected to become a member of the 2002 All-Illinois Academic
Team, as well as the Student Speaker for the 2002 commencement ceremony. She was
also a member and officer Alpha Lambda Phi, JJC's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. In
addition to being a devoted mom of sons Jonathan and Nicholas, Karen also finds
time to volunteer with University Ministry at USF, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and
the Illinois PTA. In her leisure time, she enjoys reading and cross-stitch.
When asked about her experience at JJC, Karen spoke very highly of the college:
"My education at Joliet Junior College far exceeded the typical community college
experience. In addition to attaining academic excellence, the supportive and encouraging
community at Joliet Junior College empowered me with a sense of success and accomplishment.
JJC - I had the time of my life!
