Kids College

Welcome to Kid's College! Designed for students ages 3 to 17, these classes provide enrichment for imaginative young minds. Many are delighted with the chance to develop new skills and explore topics in creative settings. Students enjoy hands on activities not only in the art and engineering classes, but also in classes designed to foster reading and mathematics. Classes are set during the day, evening and Saturdays to accommodate the busy schedules of today's families.

Toddlers

Are you thinking of enrolling your toddler in preschool or daycare, but would like help prepare them to separate from you in a new environment? Give your child an opportunity to explore a preschool setting and participate in fun activities along with many common daily routines they may encounter at their preschool facility. Children can experience these activities while parents participate in a nearby classroom discussion about separation anxiety and how to create healthy transitions and rituals that can ease the change from parent care to child care. Learn activities to practice at home that can help prepare your child for transitioning to daycare.

Age Group 6-8

Kid's College Discover Dinosaurs (LLC 3610)
Spend a morning with the Dinosaurs. Enjoy learning about the fascinating creatures that roamed the earth millions of years ago. This class will delight youngsters and inspire them to learn more.

Word Wall Workout (LLC 3609) Word Wall Words can be difficult. Get some extra practice in a fun, multisensory environment. Each student may bring up to six words to practice from their own personal list. Students will share words and work on fun activities to help build retention and recognition of the words. Students will learn fun activities they can repeat at home with new words. Classes are not dependent students may enroll in all or just a few.

Math in Literature (LLC 3312)
Explore math topics through fun, exciting books and hands-on experiences. This series of classes will introduce various math topics, build understanding, and motivate students to learn. Topics will be introduced with a story book that students will get to keep. Students will also enjoy learning about various math topics with hands-on activities. Self Defense for Youngsters (LLC 3424)
Learn the very basics of Ryukyu-Kempo Karate, an extremely effective form of self defense utilizing attacks to pressure points which can render an opponent helpless in a split second. Learn techniques that do not rely on strength and can be employed equally by men, women and children. Comfortable clothing and gym shoes should be worn. Full t-shirts please, no tank tops.

Sign Language for Kids (LLC)
Discover a new language and build communication skills. Learn the basics of American Sign Language. Students will focus on the alphabet, counting and basic signs to begin communication in sign language. Book included in price of course.

Children in a Pottery Class Computers for Children I (LLC 5001)
This class offers basic instructions and tips on improving computer skills. Students will learn how to produce great papers and presentations using Microsoft word. They will receive instruction on PowerPoint and Excel. Recommended for children in 4th grade through 8th grade.

Computers for Children II (LLC 5002)
A continuation of Computers for Children I. This class will offer more tips on improving a child's computer skills. Continue cultivating PowerPoint and Excel skills. Recommended for children in 4th grade through 8th grade.

Keyboarding for Computers for Children (LLC 505)
In today's computer era, almost everyone needs to know how to type. This class is perfect for children who need to learn the computer keyboard. It is designed for those with little or no previous typing experience.

Computer Drafting for Kids (LLC 3519)
Take a fascinating journey into the world of computerized design drawings. Students will enjoy learning about AutoCAD design software in a hands on classroom environment. Activities will include designing a personal version of a dream home, generating unique computerized drawings and learning common CAD symbols used by professionals. Perfect for any student interested in a career in the mechanical, architectural, or interior design field or for those who are intrigued by unique computer design programs; the possibilities are endless.

Drawing (LLC 931)
Uncover a hidden talent, or expand on those sketches found in notebook margins. In four weeks, students will experience several different mediums such as graphite, charcoal and pastels while learning the basics in composition, perspective and shading. Designed especially for students between 8 and 12.

Advanced Drawing (LLC 3690)
Designed for students who have enjoyed Drawing and would like to continue with new and more advanced projects.

Egg Drop (LLC 3608)
Experiment with engineering and design in one of the most popular challenge experiments. Students will design and build a container for a raw egg. Will it be able to withstand a long distance drop? Students will enjoy creating unique containers to carry their egg to safety. All materials provided.

Junior Digital Photography (LLC 3381
Just getting started with taking pictures, but need to know the basics of how to take a good picture? Bring a digital camera and join in the fun as our instructor guides young photographers through the first steps to taking pictures that will become favorites in the family photo album.

Math in Literature (LLC 3413)

Pottery (LLC 741)
Students can focus on their area of personal interest while creating a number of unique items. All materials are provided, including clay and glazes - the firing is done for you too. This class is held at "The Talent Zone," 802 Wilcox Street, Joliet.

Con mucho gusto! The fun continues. This class will continue to build on the basics of the Spanish language. Students will enjoy working to build new vocabulary and exploring their new language. Please bring materials from Spanish for Kids I.

Summer Class Baby-Sitting Certificate (LLC 926)
Want to begin baby-sitting for extra cash or ready to be in charge of siblings at home? This course will educate youth 11 to 16 to provide basic childcare. Participants who complete this course will earn the American Red Cross Baby-sitting certification. Bring a sack lunch.

CPR for the Dynamic Super Sitter (LLC 3314)
So you are a certified American Red Cross Baby Sitter and want to become the best sitter in the neighborhood? This class is a great extension to add to and improve your First Aid/CPR skills. You will learn the proper techniques for breathing, choking, and cardiac emergencies. We will review how to reach help quickly and correctly. Ages: 11-17 years old (If your current certification is about to expire; you may also register for this class to renew.) Please dress comfortably and bring a lunch.

Commercial Acting for Teens (LLC 3317)
Would you like to get into commercials? Do you think it would be fun to spend an afternoon learning how to audition for commercials and see yourself on television doing an actual script? This seminar will include information on obtaining an agent, headshots and resumes. Find out how the business works including working with casting directors and clients. Appropriate for ages 10-18years. Registration is for each child, but a parent/responsible adult is encouraged to stay to help memorize lines and learn about the industry.

Greeting Card Extravaganza (LLC 3607)
What could be more fun than creating a personalized design of your own? Create greeting cards for your family and friends using rubber stamping techniques. You will get to keep the creations you make and learn techniques you can repeat at home on your own. Whether for birthdays, holidays, or just a friendly, "Hello", you will enjoy the fun of creating a smile for someone special. All supplies provided.

High School Treasure (LLC 3606)
Learn to create a memory book of your high school years. Prom, Athletics or a special day with friends; use those pictures to create a treasure you will enjoy for years to come. Create 2 two page 12X12 scrapbook layouts. Learn techniques and ideas to personalize your pages and ideas for more pages to create at home. If you like, bring some pictures with you to use or create you pages and mount pictures later at home. All supplies provided.

Holiday Stamping (LLC 3605)
Enjoy making a special holiday gift for someone to treasure. Use stamping techniques to create a gift and learn to make holiday cards and projects for friends and family. Give someone a special holiday gift this year that reflects your time, effort and unique design. All supplies provided.

Parent Child Stamping (LLC 3604)
Spend an evening together creating greeting cards and fun stamping projects. Create a special memory. Bring a copy of a special picture and enjoy creating a picture frame together. Using stamping techniques you will design a 3-D photo frame to display your photograph. This would be a perfect opportunity to create a personalized gift for a special grandparent or loved one. All supplies provided.

Robolab I (LLC 917)
Young engineers will design and build a single sensor robot using the Lego Robolab system. Teams of young engineers will learn how to program a robot and have it follow a line pattern.

Robolab II (LLC 918)
Young engineers will design and build a multi-sensor robot. Using the Lego Robolab system, teams of young engineers will make a robot navigate through an obstacle course. PREREQUISITE: Robolab I.

Robolab III (LLC 919)
Young engineers will design and build a multi-sensor robot. Using the Lego Robolab system, teams of young engineers will make a robot collect atmospheric data and then process the information through the use of G code. PREREQUISITE: Robolab I

Robolab IV (LLC 920)
Young engineers will design and build a multi-sensor robot for remote control. Using the Lego Robolab system, teams of young engineers will make a robot collect soil and rock samples; then process the information through the use of G code. PREREQUISITE: Robolab I.

Advanced Robolab I (LLC 3511)

Teens in a Class Algebra (LLC 3603)
Complete the first semester of an Algebra One class. Benefit from direct instruction with a patient and skilled instructor. Text Included (Appropriate for grades 7-12)

Well-Written Essays (LLC 3318)
How do I start? Why doesn't it say what I thought? Writing essays can be an art and drawing stick figures will not pass. Learn the requirements for a well-written essay and the steps needed to succeed. This course will cover the topics you need beginning with pre-writing and finishing with publishing. Be prepared for state exam writing and college application essays.

Learning from Literature (LLC 3320)
When asked to define a theme do you cringe? This class will provide practical application of techniques used to analyze characters, define themes and understand how story structure and settings affect the story. Students will begin by reading a short story and benefit from instruction and application of techniques to increase learning from literature.

Necessities for the Research Paper (LLC 3319)
Effective research papers are requirements from high school through college. Learn how to write a research paper beginning with an effective thesis statement and finishing with a concise conclusion. Topics will also include how to find research with a class trip to the college library and the pitfalls of plagiarism.

Geometry (LLC 3602)
Complete the first semester of a High School level Geometry class. Benefit from direct instruction with a patient and skilled instructor. Text Included (Appropriate for grades 7-12)

Grammar Review (LLC 3321)
Nouns, verbs, adjectives may be ok, but what about a gerund? With state tests and college entrance exams in the future, this is a perfect time to review your grammar skills.

Test Preparation
ACT Prep Workshop (LLC 7230)

This workshop provides an overview of the ACT test and recommends success strategies for teens. Students take a pre- and post assessment test that addresses the subjects of English, mathematics, science, and reading. Included in the class materials are four complete practice tests, review sections, test-taking strategies, and college admission advice. Text book and other class materials are included in the class fee.

Writing for the ACT (LLC 3601)
Will you be taking the ACT plus writing? All Illinois juniors will take the PSAE in April; this will include the ACT plus writing. Are you ready for the Essay? Specially designed with tips and strategies to improve your ACT essay, learn how the ACT essay is scored and ways to increase your score on the writing portion.

Interview Right and Get Hired (LLC 3537)
Looking to find a summer job? Are you nervous about the interview? Take some time and prepare yourself for that interview. One of the most important skills that you will learn at an interviewing skills workshop is listening skills. It is important because learning to listen is a skill that not all of us possess but can be learned. Being an active listening is important to understanding what is being said to you. Another goal is to teach people how to be interviewed for a job. You will also find out details about the different types of job interviews; the more you know, the better prepared you will be. You can also learn a lot about how to answer the toughest questions asked by the interviewer including the reasoning behind some of the tough questions. Participants will be given the opportunity to practice these new skills through the use of videotaping and watching back their own video. Knowing what to expect is critical in a good performance and making a good impression.
