How do I fulfill the Geometry prerequisite?
The Geometry prerequisite can be fulfilled in one of the following options:

  • COMPASS geometry score of a 50 or greater
  • Two semesters of high school geometry with a ‘C’ average for both semesters
  • Completing a geometry course at another college with a ‘C’ or better

How can I take the COMPASS geometry test?
The COMPASS geometry test may be taken in the Academic Skills Center. Please click here for more information:  PLACEMENT TESTING IN FORMATION.  A student will know his COMPASS geometry score immediately after completing the test.

What is the COMPASS test?
The COMPASS test is a tool designed by ACT to assist academic departments in placing students in appropriate classes. Please click here Click on this link for more details PLACEMENT TESTING INFORMATION on testing information.

Which classes have Geometry as a prerequisite?
The following classes have Geometry as a co-prerequisite: Math 119, Math 123, Math 127, Math 128, Math 131, Math 135, and Math 142. These classes also have a prerequisite of Math 098 or appropriate COMPASS placement.

After I take the COMPASS test, how do I know which math class I can
register for?
After taking the COMPASS test, you will get a print out with your raw scores and verbiage which tells you which classes you are eligible to register for.

What if I didn't get the COMPASS placement I thought I should have?
The Department of Mathematics has a method to handle this.  Methods include short placement advancement courses at JJC as well as analysis of high school performance.  Check out THIS FLOWCHART and contact our MATH PLACEMENT SPECIALIST for more information.

Why must I show proof for Geometry?
Demonstrating competency in Geometry is a requirement mandated by four year colleges in Illinois. Thus proof of competency in geometry if required for any student enrolling in Math 119, 123, 124, 127, 128, 131, 135, 137, 141, 142, 150, 153, 170, 171, 172, 210, and Math 220, even if they have been enrolled in the class previously (either at JJC or another college).

Can I be placed in a 100 level math course based on my high school transcript?
The department’s policy is students are eligible to enroll in a 100 level math course if that is where they placed according to their COMPASS scores, not on math classes taken at high school. Note: Geometry is a co-requirement for most 100 level math courses and this requirement can be fulfilled by geometry taken at the high school level. Please see How do I fulfill the Geometry prerequisite for more details.
