Taking Great Photos of Children (LLC 4019)
Learn how to take great photographs of children by uncovering secrets that will turn your kiddie snapshots into photos worth framing. During this class, students will learn about taking great candid and formal photos, keeping your child’s attention, and getting the perfect smile. This class is geared to the beginning and intermediate digital or film photographer. Students should bring a camera to class.

Getting to Know Your Digital Camera- Basics (LLC 3688)
Do you have a new or used digital camera, but feel overwhelmed with the new features and technology. In this relaxed but informative class you will learn the basics of digital cameras. Designed for people who are new to digital cameras, photography and the technology behind them. This wonderful introduction into the digital world is slow-paced and goes through every step of the photography process to allow you to take the best possible photos with your camera. Join this class now to understand the parts of your camera inside and out. Together we will explore how to hold the camera, use a tri-pod and what the camera icons mean. We will also learn about how to use your camera settings to your advantage, photographic composition and basic lighting

Getting to Know Your Digital Camera (LLC 3618)
Learn the basics of your digital camera. Bring your digital camera and manual to this hands on class and learn to access different settings and functions. This class will help you build an understanding of your camera’s features such as; flash settings, lens apertures and general camera basics.

Image Editing for Photographers (LLC 3392)
Use Photoshop to get the most out of your photographs. This four week intensive hands-on workshop will include color correcting images, raw image workflow, resampling images and resolution, and using special effects. Students will have homework assignments each week. This class is a perfect follow up to Secrets of Great Digital Photography.

Secrets of Great Digital Photography (LLC 3391)
Are you looking for an intensive hands-on workshop that will overhaul your picture-taking abilities? This eight-week course will give you solid photography skills that will improve the quality of your pictures. Topics will include camera basics and exposure, composition, low light conditions, landscapes and nature, people and family, sports and technical tips, and equipment for the serious photographer. Students will take photos between sessions and bring to class for discussion.

Great Photographic Composition (LLC 4133)
Superb photography requires more than just a basic understanding of the technical capabilities of your camera. Translating an image captured from a three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional plane requires attention to elements outside of content. Students will learn about the important roles that compositional elements - including symmetrical and asymmetrical balance, texture, and line - play in the creation of outstanding images. Each student should bring 5 – 10 photographs for critique. (Single, three-hour session)

Image Editing II Macro - Nature, Landscape, Architecture (LLC 4283)
This is a continuation course of Image Editing focusing on techniques to enhance Nature, Landscape and Architecture photos. Topics will include, adding realistic and incredible depth of field, working with selective light, image manipulation, creating beautiful panoramas, understanding HDR and merging bracketed images, changing individual colors in Camera Raw and Photoshop and more. Additional focus will be given on the new content aware features in CS5.

Image Editing II - Senior and Specialty Portraiture (LLC 4284)
This is a continuation course of Image Editing focusing on techniques to enhance portraits. Learn techniques in airbrushing, adding selective light, pulling subjects into new backgrounds and enhancing images with textures, backgrounds, overlays and brush strokes.  Additional focus will be given on the new content aware features in CS5, image production and protection.

New! Iconic Images-Great Photographs and the Stories Behind Them (LLC 4340)
Any picture can speak 1,000 words, but only a select few say something poignant enough to galvanize an entire society. Learn the true stories behind some of the world's most iconic photographic images, and discover the details about photographs that screamed so loudly that the entire world stopped to take notice. Enrollment also includes soup and sandwich lunch.

New! Holiday Photography (LLC 4341)
Holidays bring many photographic opportunities along with challenges to capture memorable moments.  Learn how to improve your holiday photos and capture memories that will be treasured for years to come.  Topics will include: capturing the scene, shooting in low light settings and posing.  Bring your camera; point and shoots welcome.  This class is not suggested for "Secrets of Great Digital Photography" students.

Have you always wanted to take great pictures of Fido the dog, Tiger the cat, or maybe the family turtle? Learn strategies to get those valued photos with your point and shoot camera or your fancy DSLR.  Models will be provided.

New!  Managing Digital Photography in LightRoom 3 (LLC 4343)
Photographers, do you want to learn to manage your digital photography work more efficiently using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom?  This is a hands-on course designed to introduce Adobe Lightroom's powerful features. Learn how to manage photography development workflow, catalog images with ease and use development and retouching tools to enhance photographic work.  Organize work into slideshows, Web presentations, and generate quality prints.   Students should have completed "Secrets of Digital Photography" or have a base understanding of handling digital files from their digital camera.  Students will be encouraged to bring digital photo files to class using a USB drive.  Class will be conducted in the JJC Computer Lab, but students may bring their own laptops if they currently have an installation of LightRoom.

New! Posing for Photographers (LLC 4344)
This class one day seminar for photographers will demonstrate specialized poses for both commercial and editorial advertising along with family and wedding portraiture. Models will move from pose to pose while the photographers will develop skills with directing subjects and developing insight into dynamic form. This is a hands-on photography seminar.  Photographers are encouraged to bring lighting equipment along with camera. Dress for comfort and bring a sack lunch.

Secrets of Great Digital Photography (LLC 3391)

Secrets of Lighting (LLC 4016)
Do you own a lighting studio setup but, need help with getting the best use of it?   This class will cover the essentials of lighting arrangements for studio portrait lighting.  You will need a SLR digital camera, a flash system and light stand with umbrella to complete the projects in this class.  Secrets of great digital required.   Topics will include how to read a hand held light meter, corporate and illustrative photography and wedding sittings.  (This is a core class for the Digital Photography Certificate)

Fundamentals of Photoshop (GRAF 1006)
Add excitement to your digital photographs with Photoshop. You will learn how to use curves and levels to adjust and correct color. You?ll have fun using filters to enhance the look and feel of your photographs and you will learn how to combine images to create stunning original pictures.

 

Elective Classes

 

Illustrative Photography (LLC 4134)Focus on Fashion, Glamour and Wedding Photography with special effects.  Projects will include using live models to develop portfolio. (This is an elective class for the Digital Photography Certificate; students need to have completed core classes before start date.)

Advertising and Still Life Photography (LLC 4135)
Focus on photographing products and images used for advertising purposes.  Learn presentation techniques as well as image design and lighting techniques for product photography.  (This is an elective class for the Digital Photography Certificate; students need to have completed core classes before start date.)

Secrets of Lighting II (LLC 4136)
Expand upon your knowledge of lighting techniques.  Get out of the studio and learn to set up lighting on location.  Hands on projects will include creating your own backdrops and soft diffusing light panels.  Supply list will be given budget $70 for materials. (This is an elective class for the Digital Photography Certificate; students need to have completed core classes before start date.)

Nature, Travel & Close-Up Photography (LLC 4232)
Focus on outdoor settings.ˇ Scenery, landscapes and getting close to nature, learn techniques for artistic photos of nature up close and far away.ˇ Saturday morning classes will meet at various locations for nature photo shoots.  Be prepared to travel.  Saturday trip attendance is not mandatory to meet class requirements. 

Architectural Photography (LLC 4233)
Focus on Interior and Exterior Photos. Taught in collaboration with an interior designer, this class will give hands on practice with home staging basics and lighting techniques to highlight room design for maximum marketing appeal.ˇ Exterior photography techniques will also focus on capturing landscape design and architectural appeal.  Some classes will meet in Chicago for photo shoots be prepared to travel.

New! Strobist-Lighting Techniques (LLC 4300)
Make no location unattainable. This advanced lighting techniques class will take you on location with off-camera system lighting.ˇ Designed for those photographers that remain unbound by studio setup, this class will include topics such as; on TLL- Through the Lens Metering, Flash Essentials, Direction, Color & Quality of Light, setting up a wireless master commander, speedlights and speedlighting systems.ˇ Additionally students will practice techniques in using flash compensation to effectively control lighting effects, creative uses of alternative flash synch modes including Rear & Slow Curtain, Auto FP High-speed Sync and controlling on location lighting.ˇ Class will include field trips to various locations with a provided model for completing exercises, be prepared to travel.
