Beginning Genealogy: Discovering Your Family History (LLC 327)
This three-week seminar will help the "family historians" get started in tracing their family tree. Discuss how to do an oral history interview. Learn to use resources, such as the Newberry Library, Illinois Regional Archive Depository (IRAD), family History Center, library resources and courthouse records. Discuss research techniques, proper documentation, and organizing tips. Some computer knowledge is helpful.
Researching Your Ancestors (LLC 3530)
Take the mystery out of finding your roots. Have you walked into a library, like the Newberry Library or the Illinois State Archives and not known where to turn or what to even what to ask? This course is designed to help the beginner or intermediate genealogist to focus on the "P.S.R." - The Plan. The Search and The Retrieval- of documents and resources needed for their family tree.
Uncovering Answers In Your Family Tree: Next Steps to Solving Road Blocks (LLC 3823) New
This intermediate course is for family historians to research and investigate other relevant tools and techniques to filling in the gaps of their family tree. The course is designed as a continuation of the beginning sessions by using census data, court records, military records, city directories and international records for elusive ancestors. Students will utilize their existing genealogies as case studies for online databases and archived records. A bibliography of resources, forms and other helpful research and organization techniques presented throughout the three weeks. Computer knowledge is required. Prerequisite: “Digging your Family Roots; Tools, Techniques & Resources for Beginning Genealogy” (Beginning Course) or intermediate level genealogist
