Welcome to Kid's College! Designed for students ages 3 to 17, these classes provide enrichment for imaginative young minds. Many are delighted with the chance to develop new skills and explore topics in creative settings. Students enjoy hands on activities not only in the art and engineering classes, but also in classes designed to foster reading and mathematics. Classes are set during the day, evening and Saturdays to accommodate the busy schedules of today's families.

Age Group 3-5

Children in 'Trains, Trains, Trains' class

Big Haulers (LLC 4027)
Tractors, Dump Trucks, Backhoes and more…  These are the big machines that keep our country going.  The big haulers will be the focus of fun stories and activities providing big entertainment for little ones.

Trains, Trains, Trains (LLC 3390)
Steam engines, tank engines, Thomas, and more. What could be more fun than a morning filled with locomotive legends? There will be plenty of stories and activities to delight young engineers.

New! Arts and Crafts with a Twist! (LLC 4290)
Arts and Crafts you can use, eat, learn from, and have fun with.  Make jewelry, snack dishes, office supplies, decorations, games, and much more!  Activities are designed to inspire creativity, promote following instructions, practice fine and gross motor skills, working together, and mostly having fun.  Come string up some beads, make a dream catcher, bird feeder, a fishbowl you can eat, get dirty with worms and mud that taste good, cut it up with a windsock creation, keep organized with a custom pencil holder, build it with gum drops, can you hit the bulls-eye after making it, come have fun this summer, and learn something while doing it

Princess Tea Party (LLC 4239)
Dress as your favorite princess and join us for a special tea party.  Enjoy an enchanting morning with fairy tale princess themed stories, activities and a special tea party.

Comprehension Camp (LLC 4240)
Develop comprehension skills with this fun, creative class    Students can develop comprehension no matter what their reading level as exercises will focus on listening comprehension and following oral directions. Unique and fun stories, along with hands-on activities will make each morning an enjoyable learning experience.

 

New! Why it Works (LLC 4350)
Light bulbs, wind mills, televisions and more, young scientists will enjoy these classes devoted to the very basics of engineering.  Using stories and hand-on exercises students will be encouraged to explore our working world of gadgets and inventions and learn how and why some of our everyday objects work.  Each session will be devoted to a different topic.  Students may join in any session, no prerequisites required.

New! Count Me in! (LLC 4351)
Make math come alive!  Students will enjoy many hands-on activities involving the numbers we use and how they relate to our everyday lives.  Devoted to building appreciation and real life understanding of numbers, each session will be devoted to a different topic.  Students may join in any session, no prerequisites required.

Computer Drafting for Kids (LLC 3519)
Take a fascinating journey into the world of computerized design drawings. Students will enjoy learning about AutoCAD design software in a hands on classroom environment. Activities will include designing a personal version of a dream home, generating unique computerized drawings and learning common CAD symbols used by professionals. Perfect for any student interested in a career in the mechanical, architectural, or interior design field or for those who are intrigued by unique computer design programs; the possibilities are endless.

Pottery (LLC 741)
Students can focus on their area of personal interest while creating a number of unique items. All materials are provided, including clay and glazes - the firing is done for you too. This class is held at "The Talent Zone," 802 Wilcox Street, Joliet.  

Young Engineers Camp (LLC 4085)

Build a different project each day.  Young engineers will love this hands-on camp with projects students can design and build with everyday materials.  Whether a balloon powered car or a crush resistant package, your child will gain knowledge of the team work and creativity used by teams of engineers when designing and refining these hands-on projects.  All supplies will be included in camp cost. 

Junior Digital Photography Camp (LLC 3381)
Explore a hobby that can last a lifetime and even branch into an exciting career.  Bring a digital camera and join in the fun as our instructor guides young photographers through the steps to taking pictures that will become favorites in the family photo album.  Students will learn about basic composition and enjoy fun exercises designed to build photography skills.  Students will end week with their online video album.

Entrepreneur Camp (LLC 4296)
Do you have a great idea?  Do you want to have your own business someday?  Do you like to create new things?  You may be an Entrepreneur.  One thing a good idea needs is a plan.  In this class you will explore a variety of business options, and create a business plan for the idea you choose.  You will learn how to develop your ideas, organize your facts, market your product/service, and potentially make a profit.  You will use a variety of micro-soft office software, the internet, basic accounting tools, and other creative arts materials as needed.  At the end of this course you will have a basic business plan that you can present with visual aides; ready to find investors!

Energy Camp (LLC 4241)
Learn about energy, forms of energy and build conservation onto every day habits with this four part series.  Students will enjoy a different hands-on activity each day.

New!  Simple Machines (LLC 4352)
Young engineers will be fascinated building simple machines using Lego?s newest kits.  Each session will encourage team building as students will work in teams to build a simple machine.  A different project will be completed each time.  Students may take any session, no prerequisites required.

New! Fused Glass Self-Portrait (LLC 4353)
Students will be fascinated with the combination of art and science in this hands-on camp.  Students will learn about the science of glass: how it is poured, manipulated and fused along with the basics of self-portraits, and famous self-portrait works of art.  Students will follow a process beginning with sketches and finishing with a fused glass work of art. ˇ

New! Intro to Speech (LLC 4354)
Designed especially for beginning speakers.  Join a fun and interactive workshop dedicated to introducing students to the techniques of presentation skills.  Focus will be on basic skills for performing speeches and tips on combating speech anxiety. Students will work with prewritten material and a short speech of their own creation.

Cupcakes for Kids (LLC 3936)
A fun decorating class just for Kids! Learn the very basics of decorating in this interactive hands-on class. Students will enjoy decorating cupcakes of their own. All supplies included in class cost.

Baby-Sitting Certificate (LLC 926)
Want to begin baby-sitting for extra cash or ready to be in charge of siblings at home? This course will educate youth 11 to 16 to provide basic childcare. Participants who complete this course will earn the American Red Cross Baby-sitting certification. Bring a sack lunch.

CPR for the Dynamic Super Sitter (LLC 3314)
So you are a certified American Red Cross Baby Sitter and want to become the best sitter in the neighborhood? This class is a great extension to add to and improve your First Aid/CPR skills. You will learn the proper techniques for breathing, choking, and cardiac emergencies. We will review how to reach help quickly and correctly. Ages: 11-17 years old (If your current certification is about to expire; you may also register for this class to renew.) Please dress comfortably and bring a lunch.

Robolab I (LLC 917)
and improved the Lego Mindstorm System has arrived. If your child has enjoyed Robolab in the past they will love working with the new system. Young engineers will work in teams as they design and build a robot.

Robolab II (LLC 918)
Using the Lego Mindstorm system, teams of young engineers will build and design robots increasing in complexity and function. PREREQUISITE: Robolab I.

Robolab III (LLC 919)
Using the Lego Mindstorm system, teams of young engineers will build and design robots increasing in complexity and function. PREREQUISITE: Robolab I.

Robolab IV (LLC 920)
Using the Lego Mindstorm system, teams of young engineers will build and design robots increasing in complexity and function. PREREQUISITE: Robolab I.

Robolab Camp/Engineering (LLC 921)
Enjoy special savings when you enroll in Robolab I through IV. See above for individual class descriptions. 

Speech Camp (LLC 3843)
Join in a fun and interactive camp dedicated to helping improve presentation skills.  Topics will include: writing effective speeches, performing speeches, and tips on speech anxiety.  The final day students will perform a speech written in the camp; parents and family members will be welcome to attend.  Camp is appropriate for all levels, from students wishing to join competitive teams to the speech phobic.  

 

Creative Writing Camp (LLC 4088)

Young authors will enjoy learning techniques to express themselves through writing.  Poetry, Prose, Fiction and Non-fiction expand creative talent through writing and journaling exercises in a fun and friendly environment.  Whether already writing or exploring a hidden talent, this camp is appropriate to help develop all skill levels.

New! Painting Camp (LLC 932)
Students will enjoy different techniques used with watercolor painting and the basics of acrylic painting.  All supplies provided, please dress for painting.

Gaming Camp (LLC 4299)
Video game enthusiasts will learn how to design and build their own video game in this hands-on camp.  This creative camp will build skills in creativity and technology for students with an interest in computers, gaming and technology.

Computer Drafting for Kids (LLC 3519)

New! Screenwriting/ Movie Making (LLC 4355)
Take a step into the creative world of screenwriting.  Young authors will enjoy learning the basics of writing a simple script and making it into a short movie to share.  The final day of class will involve watching student productions.  Parents are encouraged to attend the viewing session.

Car Maintenance for Teens (LLC 925)
This hands-on class offers students the chance to learn from a trained automotive technician from the Joliet Junior College's Professional Auto Service Department.  The class provides basic car maintenance and safety inspections from checking oil to changing a tire.

Test Preparation

ACT Prep Workshop (LLC 7230)
This workshop provides an overview of the ACT test and recommends success strategies for teens. Students take a pre- and post assessment test that addresses the subjects of English, mathematics, science, and reading. Included in the class materials are three complete practice tests, review sections, and test-taking strategies.  Text book and other class materials are included in the class fee.  Students must bring a calculator and #2 pencil to class.

Writing for the ACT (LLC 3601)
Will you be taking the ACT plus writing? All Illinois juniors will take the PSAE in April; this will include the ACT plus writing. Are you ready for the Essay? Specially designed with tips and strategies to improve your ACT essay, learn how the ACT essay is scored and ways to increase your score on the writing portion.
