Two JJC students from the Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences Department were recently recognized as "Top Horticulture Team in America" by the National Post Secondary Agriculture Student Association.
According to department chairman Jim Ethridge, Bradley Meyer, Wilmington, and Billy Sharp, Kankakee, finished third and fourth respectively in the nation, which earned them top team honors among community college competitors.
Each student will receive a financial honorarium for their success.
Sharp is completing an internship at River Forrest Country Club in Elmhurst. Meyer has completed two degrees in horticulture, one in greenhouse management and a second in nursery management. He will be completing his third major in turfgrass management this semester.
Meyer will spend the next semester doing an international horticulture internship in Germany. Doug Foss of the department serves as sponsor for the competitors.
Culinary Arts
Three students from the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Department will be recognized as Culinary Scholars by the national magazine "Restaurant Startup and Growth" and Tyson Food Service next month, according to department chairman Mike McGreal.
The students are Erica Kendall, Andy Okatuyren and Celia Johnston. JJC will be featured as one of the top schools in the nation in culinary excellence.
In addition, Johnston, culinary arts, and Casey Zydek, hospitality, are going to be honored by the National Restaurant Association on May 17 during the National Restaurant Show at the "Salute to Excellence." According to McGreal, this full-day event includes top industry experts conducting seminars and workshops for the students being honored and ends with a gala dinner and awards ceremony.
