There are 33 exams offered by CLEP. They cover courses in the disciplines of business, composition and literature,
foreign languages; history and social sciences; and science and mathematics.
CLEP exams require college-level knowledge and critical thinking ability; sufficient preparation is required to do well.
All CLEP exams are administered on computer.
The exams are timed. All are 90 minutes in length.
With the exception of English Composition with Essay, the tests are composed primarily of multiple-choice
questions. Some mathematics exams include fill-in type questions.
All exams are scored on a scale of 20 to 80, not 1 to 100.
The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends a credit-granting score of 50 with the exceptions of
four-semester language exam scores that are higher.*
Score reports are available upon completion of the exam so students know right away how they performed**
*
Each institution sets its own policy. JJC requires a score of 50 or better to grant credit. See the JJC Equivalency
Charts.
** Scores for English Composition with Essay are available 2 – 3 weeks after the exam date.
The CLEP testing fee is $65. (Effective July 1, the CLEP testing fee will be $70. Subject to change.) Some exams offer an optional essay. (If the optional essay is required, the student
must inform the testing center at the time the appointment is made and the student is charged an additional $10 fee. See exam listing
below***). Joliet Junior College
charges an administrative fee of $15. The CLEP fee may be paid with a check or a credit/debit card. The JJC fee may be paid by cash or
credit/debit card or check at the service center or by check or money order on Saturday testing dates in the Academic Skills Center. The
CLEP payment and the JJC fee are separate and cannot be combined. No cash can be accepted when the Service Center is closed.
Exams are administered by appointment only. Testing is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
