Emergency Medical Services Program Information

EMTs taking patient into ambulance

Emergency Medical Services (E.M.S.)

To register for this course, you MUST contact Charlotte Garrabrant.

The entry level EMS career program is EMT-Basic. EMT-B is a 4.5 month program offered in both the spring and fall semesters. JJC offers three EMT courses at Main Campus, all of which meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The morning program meets 8:30am until 12:00pm, the afternoon program meets from 1:00pm until 4:30pm and the evening program from 6:00pm to 9:30pm.  A 4th EMT Basic class will be held at Morris Hosptial on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 6:00pm-10:00pm

This course prepares the student for the Illinois Department of Public Health State EMT-B licensing examination (given at the college) and an entry-level job in EMS on a basic ambulance service.

Prerequisites for the E.M.S. program are:

  • 18 years of age
  • a high school diploma or GED
  • a current CPR for health care card or equivalent (includes infant, child and adult choking and CPR)
  • a "C" or better in English 099 and English 021 or appropriate COMPASS scores for English 101
  • Have an Illinois State Police Criminal Background check completed and in our office before registration.

Paramedic

Once the student is licensed as an EMT-B they are eligible for the EMT-P paramedic program (EMS 215-219).  The paramedic programs are held at Silver Cross Hospital and Morris Hospital and are 12 month programs. Prerequisites for the paramedic program are a current Illinois EMT-B license, 18 years of age and a current CPR for healthcare card.

Silver Cross:  Classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning in April of each year.  The student must apply through Will/Grundy EMS at Silver Cross Hospital.  Applications and further information are available in January of each year at Will/Grundy and may be obtained on their website ( http://www.willgrundyems.org/ ) or by calling 815-740-7130, ext. #3.  The application deadline is the first week in February.  All students will be required to take the Will/Grundy paramedic program entrance test, which is similar to the EMT-B final exam and state licensing exam.  The student will be required to complete field internship time on an advanced life support ambulance.  If the student does not have any affiliation with a fire department or private ambulance service, Will/Grundy will arrange the field internship time for the student.

Morris Hospital:   Classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning in August of each year.   Application packages and further information are available in May of each year from the JJC EMS Administrative Assistant in room C1047 or at the Morris Hospital EMS office.

All students will be required to take the paramedic program entrance test, which is similar to the EMT-B final exam and state licensing exam.  The student will be required to complete field internship time on an advanced life support ambulance.  If the student does not have any affiliation with a fire department or private ambulance service, Morris Hospital EMS will arrange the field internship time for the student.
