*An Introduction to Law Enforcement for the Community College Student -- will be available Fall, 2012.

"I want readers to understand the devastating effects of police misconduct and comprehend the right way to police our people,” she said. “We are not at war with the public; we are here to serve and protect. We are in our social service era of policing, an era which should cater to community health and communication with our citizens."

Karlberg pointed to a recent statistic highlighting police civil suits in regards to excessive force and brutality stating:

"It costs the city of Chicago approximately $24 million a year in police misconduct lawsuits."

Ultimately, she hopes the book will supply officers with a wealth of information to use on the job, along with the tools necessary to de-escalate situations they may face.
