After working his way through school and receiving his DVM from the University of Illinois, Wally Stein set up an extensive large and small animal practice in southern Illinois, involving herd health and preventative medicine. In the mid-1980s, he returned to the Chicago area and practiced in veterinary clinics that treated companion animals, small ruminants, deer, raptors and exotics.
For over 20 years, he employed and worked with veterinary technicians in large animal and several companion animal practices. In large animal medicine, they assisted in the collection of milk, blood, tissue and fecal samples, vaccination programs, radiographic work-ups, equine lameness, large animal surgical procedures, reproductive exams and dystocias and were key contributors to the challenge of initiating herd health programs for today's modern livestock industry.
Dr. Stein feels that no education program really can begin without proper instruction in basic livestock husbandry, restraints and nutrition. Because of this need, he was motivated to begin teaching in the Vet Tech program, so he could help train properly veterinary medical technicians to become valuable assets in any veterinary practice.
Some of Dr. Stein's interests outside of teaching include classical music, model railroading, opera and umpiring semi-pro baseball.
Dr. Stein teaches Clinical Pathology, Math for Vet Techs, Animal Management and Large Animal Nursing. He also is an advisor for the program.
