What background do I need to enter the Joliet programs?

Students should demonstrate a sincere interest in the preservation and development of our sensitive ecology. A basic understanding of horticulture principles and the ability to communicate effectively is desirable, although no specific coursework is required. Students interested in a career in landscape management should have a progressive and positive attitude.

What type of work can I do with an A.A.S. degree or certificate in landscape management?

Graduates of Joliet Junior College's Landscape Management Program have professional training, experience, and skills in the basics of landscape management. Our professional training emphasizes plant identification, care and culture, designing full-scale landscapes, construction techniques, bidding, estimating, maintenance practices, and installation techniques. Professional positions are currently available in the following areas: sales and marketing, design, installation and maintenance, computer landscape design, crew foreman, and construction.

How much can I earn?

Our graduates may expect to earn 50-100 percent more than the entry level pay (of about $6.50 per hour) in the landscape management industry. The employment potential for competent, educated people is excellent with this exciting, high tech industry. Experienced managers may earn salaries comparable to that of many business executives.

What are the opportunities for career advancement?

There was tremendous growth in the landscape industry in the early 1990's. Expectations for this decade are even greater now that the focus is back on home and family (with the outdoor living space becoming an integral part of their space). Also, business and corporate settings along with park districts are continually adding to the ecological beauty of the land. Joliet Junior College is your opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become a part of this exciting professional industry. Career opportunities include: landscape designer, landscape sales and marketing supervisor, landscape maintenance supervisor, computer landscape designer, landscape construction supervisor, park management supervisor, golf course maintenance supervisor, and an abundance of laborer positions.

What types of learning experiences are included in landscape management programs?
