The Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Department presents Getting Out
by the Pulitzer Prize winning author Marsha Norman. This production will be held
in the Fine Arts Theatre located on the Joliet Junior College Main Campus in “K”
Building. Getting Out will be performed November 10 at 7:30 p.m.,
November 11 and 12 at 8:00 p.m. and November 13 at 2:30 p.m.
Getting Out probes into the past and present of a young woman attempting
to find her way in life after release from prison. Marsha Norman wrote Getting
Out after a suggestion by Jon Jory, a theatre director, who asked her
to write a play for the Actor’s Theater in Louisville, KY. She drew on her experience
working with disturbed adolescents at Kentucky Central State Hospital to help shape
this play. Getting Out was voted the best new play produced by
a regional theatre by the American Theatre Critics Association in 1977.
This production features Rachel K. J. Glim of New Lenox, Michelle Sheilds of Wilmington,
Ryan Dunn of Lockport, Mark Wietting of Channahon, Jacob Welch of Joliet, Nathan
Martin of Kinsman, Andrew Bender and Jaime Vargas of Crest Hill, Kim Koukas of Reddick,
Amanda M. Stechly of Manhattan, Jonathon Daniel Steinbach of Lockport, and Samantha
Pastorik of Marseilles. Kathryn Knorr of Braidwood will serve as the Stage Manager
with Nadia Hatter of Lockport assisting. Theatre Manager Nicki Blowers will direct.
Ticket prices are $5 for the general public and $4 for senior citizens. Discounts
are available for students and JJC faculty/staff. Reservations may be made by calling
the theatre office at 815-280-2200. As part of the college’s ongoing community service
project, audience members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the
production where they may be exchanged for items at the concession table. All contributions
will be donated to area shelters. Please note that this play has mature themes and
language and is not recommended for children.
