Weather and Other Emergencies

Joliet Junior College has done extensive planning for emergencies. On the first Monday of each month, at 11am and 11pm, the campus tests the Severe Weather Warning System. This test consists of the sounding of the Tornado Warning Alert and directions regarding what to do if the situation were a real Tornado Warning.

Tornado and fire drills are conducted a minimum of once a year on all campuses to familiarize staff and students with what is expected of them during these potential emergency situations.

Fire Alarm

A high-pitched, continuous alarm accompanied by flashing strobe lights. If the alarm is activated, please evacuate the building immediately through the closest exit and move away from the building.

Tornado Alarm

A series of three sets of horns accompanied by a P.A. warning to take shelter immediately.

Evacuation/shelter maps are posted in classrooms and other areas throughout campus. You will also find blue “Severe Weather Shelter” signs with a tornado emblem posted throughout campus. These areas are considered to be designated shelter areas during a tornado warning. All staff and students should familiarize themselves with the shortest exit route in case of a building evacuation as well as the closest shelter area in case of a tornado warning.

What is a Tornado Watch?

A tornado watch is issued when the weather conditions are such that a tornado could develop. Be prepared to take shelter.

What is a Tornado Warning?

A tornado warning means that a tornado or funnel cloud has been sighted in the area. Take shelter immediately!

Weather and Emergency Campus Closings:

If there is a potential for a campus closing due to inclement weather or other emergencies (such as power outages), students and staff are advised to tune in to the following radio/TV stations for information:

Sector Leader Program:

Sector Leader Program: JJC has established a group of volunteer staff members known as Sector Leaders. These volunteers have been trained in first aid, AEDs, fire extinguishers and evacuation. During an emergency, these Sector Leaders will be recognizable by their emergency vests and they will give directions to students and staff. For more information on the Sector Leader Program or to volunteer as a Sector Leader, visit our Environmental, Health and Safety Web site.
