Items Discussed

  1. It was discussed that consolidation of various testing functions at JJC be considered in the design of the new Campus Center. These functions could include ACT, Compass and Distance Education testing.
  2. Registration needs to have on-line capability.
  3. STAR and the Academic Skills Center are related by tutoring, however tutoring is not an accommodation. The Academic Skills Center is a destination for tutoring and testing.
  4. There was concern raised for the high-traffic areas, such as Admissions, Registration, Financial Aid and the Service Center, and their related queues. The queues for these areas and their relationship to each other need to be considered in the building layout to minimize congestion.
  5. Computer access for students adjacent to the Registration queue area should be considered to alleviate long lines during peak periods.
  6. Financial Aid and Counseling/Advising will always have high traffic, not just at peak enrollment periods.
  7. Admissions and Financial Aid have more front-line student interaction. Registration has more office functions with less student access comparatively. Some of the contact with Registration will be lessened in two years.
  8. The new Campus Center should support self efficacy and the bridging of people, programs and needs.
  9. The Academic Skills Center has an academic connotation and is a quiet function.
  10. In her role with the Dean of Students office as the Centennial Commons liason, Evie tutors these student residents.
  11. Counseling and Advising is key to student retention and orientation.
  12. The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs must be visible in the new facility.
  13. STAR tutors comprise part-time professional tutors and student peer tutors.
  14. Project Achieve tutors comprise three professional tutors and a faculty tutor.
  15. The Academic Skills Center comprises part-time professional tutors.
  16. The Writing Center and Speech Center comprise faculty tutors from the English Department.
  17. The Math Center comprises faculty tutors from the Math Department.
  18. The major users of the testing facilities at JJC are the Academic Skills Center (i.e. ACT, Compass, etc.), Distance Education and Nursing.
  19. Departments that include a social component in additional to other operations include Project Achieve and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.
  20. Students have to qualify for the STAR and Project Achieve programs.
  21. The following groupings were discussed using scaled graphic cutouts to initiate the adjacency discussion for the Student Development areas in the new Campus Center:
    • Group A: Admissions, Financial Aid, Registration and the Service Center (the notion of a "welcome center" atmosphere was discussed for this group).
    • Group B: Counseling/Advising, General Student Development (GSD) and Career Services (all three work closely with faculty).
    • Group C: Academic Skills Center and the Library.
    • Group D: Student Accommodations and Resources (STAR).
    • Group E: Deans of Student Success and Enrollment Management.
    • Group F: Project Achieve and OMSA (social component).
    • Group G: Dean of Students.
  22. For four of the above groups, there was a linear adjacency relationship identified as follows: A...B...D...F
  23. Groups C, E and G have less of a direct adjacency relationship to each other and to Groups A, B, D and F.
  24. Meeting adjourned: 4:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Jeffrey Sronkoski, AIA, LEED AP
Principal
