Items Discussed
- Dave gave an overview of the recent JJC site visit to Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan, and reviewed some example photos of the facility. This institution's Student Development spaces included the following:
- Triage area with a greeter.
- Non-institutional image.
- Kids table.
- Sound-proof call center with one full-time staff and a combination of part-time and student staff who provided the front line of access to the college for incoming calls only.
- Counseling and Career Center space twice the size of the Enrollment Center, but not adjacent to the Enrollment Center.
- Tutorial services all combined in one area.
- Diversity Learning Center located across the hall from the Enrollment Center.
- Enrollment Center located on one floor in one area with no distinct signage for differing departments.
- "Recruiting" was emphasized, not "Admissions".
- A discussion of the "one-stop" model ensued that began to examine the differences between new students and continuing students and their respective sequence of movements as they relate to admissions and enrollment. Knowledge sets and continuous enrollment were also discussed.
- The differences between counseling and advising were discussed as they relate to current practices at JJC. It was acknowledged that the new Campus Center would provide a great opportunity to re-think current practices.
- It was also acknowledged that the new Campus Center could become a great catalyst for other cultural shifts to occur at JJC, such as a paper-less environment, etc.
- Pat passed on some articles from "Learning by Design 2008" and "College Planning and Management – December 2007", to Jeff for his review.
- Pat invited Jeff to attend a meeting at JJC with SEDAC on June 26th. SEDAC is a state-funded organization that provides energy assessments to public institutions like JJC. Jeff indicated he would also like to invite Legat's Director of Sustainable Design, Vuk Vujovic, and perhaps the consulting engineer that will be working on the new Campus Center.
- There will be no group meeting on Thursday, May 22nd. This day will be devoted instead to individual Student Development department meetings to discuss detailed space needs for the new Campus Center. Learner Support and Technology Services department meetings will begin the week of May 26th, and Administrative Services department meetings will begin the week of June 2nd.
- Next group meeting: Thursday, May 29th, at 1:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
