Bookstore Committee Summary June 10, 2008

Purpose: To continue the architectural programming for the Bookstore component of the new Campus Center.

Attendance

  • Judy Mitchell - JJC
  • Mike Maier - JJC
  • Brian Campus - JJC
  • James Seeman - JJC
  • Jeff Sronkoski - Legat Architects

Items Discussed

  1. Mike presented and discussed with the attendees a 3-page "JJC Bookstore Wish List for New Store" that his department prepared. This document outlines detailed requirements for the Store/Selling Floor, Office Areas, E-Commerce, Dock Area, Staging Area, Storage Area, Shipping Area, Break Room/Coat Room for Staff and Miscellaneous spaces of the new Bookstore. Jeff indicated that he would review this document further and incorporate as much of it as possible into the program and design considering the 5,000 NSF budget for the Bookstore.
  2. The bookshelves in the middle of the Store/Selling Floor should be 48" high and 18" deep to allow for visual control. The bookshelves along the walls can be taller.
  3. Mike presented and discussed with the attendees a 9-page "Current/Estimated Bookstore Square Footage" document (dated 6-5-08) that his department prepared since the last meeting. This document analyzes the floor plan layouts of the existing Selling Space and the adjoining Stockroom with regard to area, layout, functional zoning and traffic flow. The document also includes a "Sales Per Square Foot Report" for both "Non-Rush" and "Rush" periods from July 2007 to June 2008. Finally, the document includes a summary of "Cash Wrap Square Footage" and "Stockrooms Square Footage". Jeff indicated that he would review this document further and incorporate as much of it as possible into the program and design considering the 5,000 NSF budget for the Bookstore.
  4. The Book Buyback/Refund/Financial Aid area was discussed with regard to Bookstore operations and traffic flow. It was discussed that this area could be combined with the cashiers to improve the Financial Aid traffic through the sales floor. A "queu area" outside the Bookstore and service window into this area would still have to be accommodated for Book Buyback and Refund operations that don't need to occur inside the Bookstore.
  5. Jeff reviewed a preliminary net area summary for the Bookstore (dated 6-10-08). The following items were discussed:
    1. The Store Manager's Office will need space to meet with vendors.
    2. A Conference Room with a table for six is needed.
    3. The E-Commerce area should accommodate 150-200 lineal feet of shelving maximized by the height of the room. The higher shelves could be accessed with a stepping platform ladder. Each shelf should accommodate materials 18" deep by 24" high.
    4. In the Shipping Area, the "overstock book shelving" should accommodate 40 lineal feet of shelving maximized by the height of the room. Each shelf should accommodate materials 18" deep by 24" high.
    5. The Shipping Area should include a "staging" area.
    6. A Fixture Storage area needs to be included in the program.
  6. Meeting adjourned: 4:00 p.m.
