President's Office

Dr. Proulx

Joliet Junior College is deeply saddened to announce the death of its president, Dr. Gena Proulx, who passed away Friday, Aug. 12, after a courageous three-year battle with fallopian tube cancer. She was 66.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; three adult daughters; her mother, Irene, and brother Gene.

Proulx began her tenure as the seventh president of Joliet Junior College in July 2006. The first woman to hold the position, Dr. Proulx came to JJC after serving six years as president of Dundalk and Essex campuses at The Community College of Baltimore County. She brought over 20 years of teaching experience in the higher education arena and was attracted to JJC, the first public community college in the nation, because of its historical roots.

Proulx devoted the majority of her career to community colleges, holding faculty and administrative posts at Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio, Genesee Community College in Batavia, N.Y. and Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, N.Y. before coming to JJC.

In 2008, Proulx spearheaded the college's master plan, which came to constitute the largest physical changes to the Main Campus location in its 40-year existence. Through her vision and leadership, seven major construction projects have taken shape across the college landscape to streamline student services and provide the space for programs and training to address critical job shortages.

During her time at JJC, Proulx was also a strong supporter of the college's chapter of the international honors society, Phi Theta Kappa. Her support of Phi Theta Kappa extended well before her years in Joliet, when she was honored with the Regional Coordinator's Award in 2004 and the Center for Excellence Brick Recognition in 2001 while at the Community College of Baltimore County.

She also brought sustainability to the forefront at JJC, helping to make it part of the college's strategic plan and supporting the creation of the first-ever JJC Sustainability Committee. In 2009, she signed the historic American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, an effort by institutions across the country to address global climate disruption, eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from campus operations, and educate students in the process.

That year, she wrote a guest column for the American Council on Education, stating, "Signing the Presidents Climate Commitment is more than a simple act of endorsement. It is recognition of the important role higher education plays in affecting climate change. With more than 11 million students enrolled in two-year institutions throughout the country, community colleges are in an unprecedented position to reach and influence their students on the issue of climate change."

This dynamic resume matched her active role in the community and in regional and national organizations, where she was a member of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Commission on Communication and Marketing, served on the Board of Directors for Provena St. Joseph Medical Center, the Will County Center for Economic Development, the Will County Workforce Investment Board, and maintained membership in the Joliet Rotary Club.

Proulx was an ardent supporter of cancer research well before her diagnosis, participating in community events like the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and after her diagnosis, making donations to the Loyola University Cancer Center where she received care. She also donated the wigs she wore during the first year she underwent chemotherapy treatment to Loyola's center.

Two years into treatment, in 2010, Proulx decided to do something she'd never done before to support the cause: she dyed pieces of hair surrounding her face teal, the color that represents ovarian cancer, in accordance with efforts by the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Her drive to support the cause was documented in local newspapers, including the JJC student newspaper, The Blazer, in 2008.

Remembrances and condolences have been shared below.

I am so sad to learn of Gena's passing. She was so vibrant and always had a smile on her face when I saw her. At the last dual-credit dinner she graciously bestowed on me her raffle prize (a lovely centerpiece) that she thought I would like. I always think of her when I look at it and thought it was so nice of her to think of me. My condolences and prayers to Gena's family.

He put his arms around you, and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids, and whispered "Peace be thine". It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. (Irish Prayer)

I too am saddened to hear this news. I just want her family to know that I am praying for their strength. I would also like to say that Dr. Proulx was an amazing lady, she never let cancer interfere with being an "active" president. I was always amazed at her social involvement, staying close with the people of JJC. She will be missed!

I am greatly heartbroken over the loss of such a wonderful, strong willed woman. She was a role model to so many people at JJC and the community. Being a former employee, Dr. Proulx was a great mentor to me, assisting with my own schooling decisions, career paths and outlook on life. She had great plans for me and my future and I look forward more than ever to fulfill them, to walk in her shoes someday. My heart goes out to her family and I will keep them you in my prayers during and after these hard times.

Dr. Proulx will always be an inspiration to me on what a strong woman may achieve and conquer. I recently began my journey against ovarian cancer, and knowing the fortitude and strength of will she exhibited through her journey has made me stronger and more determiend to face my own. It is my wish her family will take such pride in the example Dr. Proulx set for other women in the workplace-brilliant, strong and determined. She always stood so very tall, and she will be long-remembered by the community college network. May God bless and keep her safe for that day when she will see us all again. She isn't suffering now, and her memories bring smiles to others. What a gift she will continue to be to those who knew her!

I am saddened to hear of Gena's passing. She and I were fellow community college academic administrators in New York State. We worked together to collaborate on academic programs between our two institutions. When I arrived in Illinois last year, she was one of the first to welcome me to the State.

She was a lovely and caring women interested in students and their success.

She will be missed.

Dr. Gena Proulx is the only president some of us have known at JJC, and I really have an impression of both grace and dignity. I can’t imagine how she has been able to be so professional through her fight with cancer. I hope that her family knows how many of us see her as a role model. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. I wish them strength and faith during this loss.

My deepest sympathies to Gena's family and friends.

Gena was an energetic person who was involved in the community. She had regular meetings with all the various College Union representatives and asked for input and kept us informed of important issues. She will be missed.

May friends comfort you,
Faith uphold you,
Loving memories heal your heart,

I am so saddened to hear of Dr. Proulx's passing. She will be greatly missed. Her presence at JJC introduced a new; warm and welcoming environment to all members of the JJC community. As an employee off JJC for 13 years and a staff person housed at CCC; one thing that I admired of Dr. Proulx was her compassion and drive for the entire JJC community. She made it a goal to get out to all campuses and become familiar with the employees; and address specific issues that were not necessarily college-wide.

I send my condolences and pray that her family is comforted in knowing that Dr. Proulx is no longer suffering and that her work at JJC was not in vain. May her spirit live on in those whose lives have been affected by simply knowing a beautiful person.

We here at the Community College of Baltimore County will greatly miss Dr Proulx. Personally, as I read about her support of Phi Theta Kappa, I was reminded of the many trips she took with our chapter while she was here. As faculty advisor, I knew that if there was ever a need, we only had to ask and it was met. She shared stories with us of her adventures driving students to and from conferences during her early days in community colleges. Dr Proulx was a strong role model for students and faculty. As a new faculty member, she took me to lunch "to chat". It was a lovely experience. I am greatly saddened by the news of her passing and hope that her family finds comfort in the kind words of everyone here and the memories they have of her as wife and mother.

I am heartbroken at the loss of such a wonderful friend and mentor. Gena was my biggest supporter as I tried to put the JJC Morris Education Center on the map. I had the pleasure of spending time with her outside of JJC, and though we never made it to the golf course, I will play my next round with her on my mind.

This is a sad day, and my thoughts are with her family. She will be missed by many.
