Academic Support

Inge Tverborgvik
Associate of Arts

"They are very welcoming and want you to do well.  So even if you're struggling, whether it's language issues / barriers or cultural barriers, they will help you overcome it."

Community colleges in the United States are known for having many diverse support services to help students be successful in their academic and professional goals.  Here are just some of the many services available at Joliet Junior College that are commonly used by international students:

Academic Skills Center

The Academic Skills Center offers a variety of testing and tutoring services included but not limited to placement testing, makeup testing, WorkKeys testing, Prometric testing, and CLEP testing, as well as online and in-person tutoring for test preparation, JJC courses, and study aid usage.

College Success Course Beginning Fall 2014, there will be a special section of GSD 100: College Success for international students.  This semester long two credit hour course will provide students with an introduction to American community college culture and help the international students develop their academic skills.

English for Academic Purposes

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program aims to prepare non-native speakers of English with the academic skills and strategies integral to their success in future undergraduate and graduate studies.

LEAP Center

The LEAP Center offers non-native English speakers tutorial assistance in reading, writing, speaking, and grammar skills.

Office of Multicultural Student Affairs

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA) provides outreach, academic guidance, personal support, cultural resources, and leadership opportunities to enhance the educational experience and facilitate the academic and personal growth of underrepresented students.    OMSA also offers programs such as Brother2Brother (B2B) and Peer Mentors.
