Welcome
Student Accommodations and Resources (STAR) is the office designated by the college to determine if students attending the college who request accommodations are eligible to receive accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. We arrange accommodations for these eligible students, and assist college administration, faculty, and staff to provide required accommodations.
Eligibility for STAR Services
To be eligible for disability services through STAR, students must register with STAR and must have a documented disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Under the ADA and Section 504, a person has a disability if he or she has:
- A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; such as walking, standing, seeing, speaking, hearing, sitting, breathing, reading, learning, thinking, performing manual tasks, taking care of oneself.
- Has a record of such impairment or is regarded as having such impairment.

Mission
Student Accommodations and Resources is committed to providing academic support to students with documented disabilities, students with limited English Proficiency and students enrolled in Career and Technical majors. STAR is the office designated by Joliet Junior College to provide ADA/504 accommodations based on the students' educational needs as demonstrated by appropriate documentation. STAR encourages individuals to become self-advocates and independent learners by assisting students to understand their abilities, to utilize their strengths in order to maximize their learning, and to take responsibility for their learning.
Guide Dog Etiquette
When Joliet Junior College has a student who will be using a guide dog around campus, some helpful things to remember are:
- A guide dog works as a team with its blind or low vision person. They must work safely together and this requires a good deal of concentration from both of them.
- A guide dog will be wearing a harness while working. Even when a guide dog is lying near its owner's feet or sitting near the owner, the dog is in "work mode" and should not be distracted.
- It is not necessary to take the blind person's arm unless asked to do so. Always ask first. Only the blind person should lead the dog, do not take hold of the dog's leash or harness. To do otherwise would be to interfere with the team.
- Guide dogs are service animals and not pets. Please refrain from petting guide dogs.
- Guide dogs receive commands only from their owner.
- Allow the dog to rest undisturbed.
- Speak to the student, not the dog. Always ask first before assisting a student with a disability, "May I help you?". This gives the blind person the option of accepting your help or not.
