Academic Computing FAQ

Two students standing together

Why can't I open an attachment from (Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc)?

Many of these mail programs require you to download the attachment to the desktop before opening it. Of course, you must have the appropriate software to open the file, too.

I've opted into Live@Edu email but cannot access my account.

You may not have changed your password from the original that was created with your account.  Or you may have changed your password on Live@Edu but it does not change your JJC.Edu password.

Go to the password help page and follow the steps to change your password.

Why can't I print (usually after sending the print job several times)?

You must be patient when printing on a network, especially when printing a file with a lot of graphics. Do not keep resending the print job - that only makes the problem worse. Open the printer control panel and see if your job is in the queue. If it is, and you've been waiting more than 5 minutes, ask a lab assistant for help.

Where can I use a Zip or floppy disk?

We have external drives, ask a Lab Assistant.

What is the Printing Policy?

The printing policy varies between labs.  It is your responsibility to know the policy for the lab you are in.

Color printouts can be made in the Library and Cyber Cafe for a fee.

My class project is on my laptop. How can I use the data projector?

You should purchase and keep with you a USB Flash/Thumb drive.  These are cheap to purchase and can hold a lot of information.  If you need help please ask a Lab Assistant.

Can someone help me with this assignment using (Excel, PowerPoint, etc)?

The Lab Assistants can provide some technical guidance.  However, they are not tutors. If you need more help, we suggest you make an appointment with one of the tutorial services on campus: Academic Skills Center, STAR, Project Achieve, Writing and Reading Center, or the Math Learning Center.

Why can't Word open my file?

Using a Microsoft Windows PC, open Office Word first then open your document through the menu.  If you need help see a Lab Assistant.

Not all formats can be read in Office Word.

Where can I burn a CD/DVD?

Assuming you won't be violating any copyright laws, you can save to any CD-R/DVD-R on a Macintosh computer.  You can also use any Microsoft Windows PC to burn to CD-R using the built in software.

CD-RW / DVD-RW is not supported.

If you need help see a Lab Assistant.

Where are the copy machines?

There are copy machines in the Library, D-Mall and T-Building concourse.  These require the use of the Equitrac Card that can pe purchased in the Library.

What document formats do you support?

JJC supports Microsoft Office Word 2010. This program can read .docx, .doc, .rtf, and .txt among others.

If you do not have Microsoft Office Word you may use your word processor and save as an RTF (Rich Text Format) format. This can be read by most word processors though the formatting will be off.
