Campus Description

Situated on 40 acres, the 35,000 square foot North Campus includes 18 general classrooms,   biology lab, chemistry lab, photography lab, four computer labs, distance learning lab, student resource center, administrative offices, student lounge, faculty offices, conference rooms, and parking for 525 automobiles.

Fire Protection

Fire alarm panel locations:

  • Mechanical room

The North Campus is equipped with modern life-safety systems, including a building-wide sprinkler system; however, that does not necessarily eliminate the possibility of a fire occurring.

Smoke detectors are located in each of the four (4) computer labs, the four (4) resource centers, the mechanical room, and the student lounge.

Heat detectors are located in each of the four (4) restrooms, the biology lab, the chemistry lab, the biology/chemistry preparation room, and room 24 storage closet.

North Campus is also equipped with two ceiling duct detectors which are located in the student lounge (room 10) and the mechanical room. If smoke is detected, the ventilation will be shut down and the fire alarm system will be activated.

The campus will have posted evacuation plans (PDF), illuminated exit signs, emergency lights, and any necessary special fire safety equipment.

The North Campus facility has a building-wide sprinkler system. It is equipped with a Simplex 4020 fire alarm control system with smoke and heat detectors and manual pull devices.

Audible and visual signaling devices are located in corridors and common areas. Additionally, there are tamper and flow switches to detect problems with the sprinkler system, as well as water flow as a result of a sprinkler discharge.

The fire alarm system is directly connected to Orland Central Dispatch Station (OCDS). The system is monitored 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The JJC Campus Police Department is notified via a computer generated alarm when the fire alarm system is activated at North Campus.

When the fire alarm system is triggered, audible and visual signaling devices will activate. This signals the report of an emergency in the building. Everyone must consider the ringing of any fire alarm as a bona fide emergency and react accordingly. Upon the sounding of the fire alarm, the building must be evacuated as orderly and rapidly as possible.

A Simplex fire alarm enunciator panel is located just inside the North Campus main entrance with indicators showing from where in the building the alarm is originating.

An exterior knox box is located outside the main entrance. A key to the main entrance and a key to the circuit breaker panels are located in the lockbox. The RFD has a key to open the exterior knox box if access to the building is necessary when staff is not present.

Burglar Alarm System

The burglar alarm system is monitored by Emergency 24 and provides direct notification to the Romeoville Police Department (RPD) when the alarm is activated. Motion detectors are hooked into the alarm system, and if motion is detected after the alarm is set, the RPD will be notified. The JJC Campus Police Department will be notified via a computer generated alarm when the burglar alarm system is activated at North Campus.

Public Address System

The public address system is used to convey messages in case of tornado watches and warnings, building evacuations, "All Clear" notices, as well as other important messages regarding matters that must be immediately conveyed to the entire campus.

Emergency Call Boxes

An emergency call box is located in front of the parking lot outside of exit K. In case of an emergency, press the red button. When an emergency call box is activated, the Campus Police Dispatcher will respond and ask for a description of your emergency. Speak clearly into the speaker on the unit and explain your need. Press the red button after the call is ended.

The emergency call box will be tested monthly by the CSO.

Video Security System

Video cameras are installed in the building interior and on the building exterior. Security camera monitors are located near the CSO desk in the main hall and in the administrative office (room 01).

Panic Buttons

Panic buttons are located at the administration office front counter (room 01) and the resource center circulation desk (room 80). The panic button panel is located in the computer closet (room 07). Central Station Command Center is the monitoring company for the panic button system. The panic button panel must be reset after any activation (false alarm, test, or intentional activation).

First Aid Kits/Safety Devices

  • First aid kit locations
  • An automated external defibrillator (AED) is located in hall 101. It is the responsibility of the CSO to ensure that the AED unit is in operating condition.
  • A chemical spill kit is located in the biology lab (room 45) and chemistry lab (room 64).
  • A fire blanket is located in the chemistry lab (room 64).
