Notification of an impending tornado and/or adverse weather conditions may create the
need for movement to designated shelter areas.
Severe weather shelter signs are posted outside of each shelter area.
Severe Thunderstorms: Thunderstorms are damaging winds, lightening and hail. This type of storm could develop
into a tornado. Notification for this type of weather is normally given over the local
radio and television stations. They receive this information from the National Weather Service
which will issue one of the following alerts to be communicated via facsimile and
telephone from the Campus Police Department.
Severe Thunderstorm Bulletin:
Means that the conditions are such that a thunderstorm may develop.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch:
Means that there is a possibility of a storm developing which would be greater in
intensity than the severe thunderstorm indicated by the bulletin above.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning:
Indicates that a severe thunderstorm has developed and will probably affect the area
for which the warning has been issued.
Response:
A severe thunderstorm warning should be immediately reported to the designated college
official.
Tornados:
The National Weather Service will issue one of the following alerts:
Tornado Watch
This is the first alert message issued. A tornado watch indicates that conditions exist
in the area for the potential development of tornados.
Response:
The Campus Police Department will make appropriate notification. Be prepared to evacuate
to a severe weather shelter area if the tornado watch is upgraded to a tornado warning.
Tornado Warning
A warning is issued when a tornado has actually been sighted or indicated by radar.
Response:
Evacuate to severe weather shelter areas. Sector leaders will assist with evacuation to
shelter areas and follow
Sector Leader Evacuation Procedures.
Winter Storms
When a severe winter storm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service an
alert will be issued over the weather radio.
Response:
The designated college official shall decide if the school should be closed, placed on
a delayed schedule, or remain open.
Earthquake:
During an earthquake always remain calm and quickly follow the steps outlined below.
- If indoors, seek refuge in a doorway, or under a desk or table. Stay away from glass
windows, shelves, and heavy equipment.
- If outdoors, move quickly away from buildings, utility poles and other structures.
Caution: always avoid power and utility lines as they may be energized.
- Damaged facilities should be immediately reported to the Campus Police Department.
Gas leaks and power failures create special hazards. Please refer to the section on
utility failures.
- After the initial shock, evaluate the situation and if emergency help is necessary
activate the nearest fire alarm pull or call 911. Protect yourself at all times
and be prepared for aftershocks.
- If the fire alarm system is activated, follow Building
Evacuation Procedures.
- Sector leaders will assist with building evacuation and follow Sector
Leader Evacuation Procedures
Vapors/Fumes/Ventilation Problems
- If vapors, fumes, or gas odors enter your work area, or if you encounter
ventilation problems and you cannot determine its origin, leave the area immediately.
- Notify a CSO or the Campus Police Department immediately. Grundy Education Center
should call 911 immediately.
