For All Small, Contained Fires:
- Activate the nearest fire alarm pull and, if trained, use appropriate fire extinguishing methods. If not trained
on fire extinguisher use, evacuate to safety.
- Follow Building Evacuation Procedures. Leave
the building even if the alarm stops while you are on your way out. Do not return until an
"All Clear" notice is given by on-scene police or fire personnel.
- Sector leaders will assist with building evacuation and follow Sector Leader
Evacuation Procedures. If safety permits, close doors to evacuated rooms and leave the lights on.
- If there is structural contact with the fire, even though the fire may appear to be completely extinguished, the
incident must be reported to the Physical Plant Department internally at extension 2332 or (815) 280-2332 from
Grundy Education Center as the underlying cause for the fire may still remain.
For Major, Uncontrollable Fires or Explosion:
- Activate the nearest fire alarm pull.
- Call 911 from a safe location to confirm and provide the location of the fire or explosion in the building.
- Follow Building Evacuation Procedures. Leave the
building even if the alarm stops while you are on your way out. Do not return until an
"All Clear" notice is given by on-scene police or fire personnel.
- Sector leaders will assist with building evacuation and follow
Sector Leader Evacuation Procedures. If safety permits, close doors to evacuated rooms and leave the lights
on.
If You Suspect a Fire, Smoky Conditions, or Explosion:
When reporting or extinguishing a fire, cautionary judgment and common sense should serve as the best guides. The
following procedures should be followed if possible:
Remember R.A.C.E.
- Rescue: When you discover a fire, rescue or assist people in immediate danger, but only if you can do so safely and
without endangering yourself.
- Alarm: Activate the nearest fire alarm pull and call 911.
- Confine: Close all doors as you leave, but only if you can do so safely.
- Evacuate: Immediately evacuate the building.
Small fires in their incipient stage can be extinguished with a fire extinguisher only if the fire alarm has been
activated and the user is trained in fire extinguisher usage. Attempt to extinguish or control a fire only if you can do
so without endangering your or anyone else’s safety. When attempting to extinguish a fire, the individual must keep
his/her back to the exit and never allow a fire to get between the individual and the exit. Occupants should never enter
a smoke-filled room or open a door if it is warm to the touch.
For more details and locations of fire pulls see appropriate campus locations.
