Chemical Spill

Any spillage of a hazardous chemical should be immediately reported to a CSO or the Campus Police Department internally at extension 2911 or (815) 280-2911 from Grundy Education Center and the EHS Department internally at extension 2384 or (815) 280-2384 from Grundy Education Center. In addition, Grundy Education Center staff should notify the building manager and call 911 if necessary.

• When reporting, be specific about the nature of the involved material, quantity, and the exact location.
• Obtain a copy of the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if possible.
• Campus Police personnel or the CSO will (except for Grundy Education Center):
1. Begin immediate evacuation of the affected area if necessary.
2. If directed, call 911 and provide the nature of the involved material, quantity and location, and follow all directives given.
3. Secure the immediate area until the arrival of emergency personnel by any of the following means: closing doors, windows, cabinets, or shutting off fans or ignition sources without becoming exposed to any vapors, liquids, etc.
4. Anyone who may be contaminated by the spill should be moved to a safe area away from the hazard and avoid contact with others as much as possible.
• If the directive to evacuate is given, activate the nearest fire alarm and immediately begin Building Evacuation Procedures.
• Sector leaders will assist with building evacuation and follow Sector Leader Evacuation Procedures.
