Emergency Response Plan

Building Evacuation Procedures

  1. Do not use elevators.
  2. Orderly but rapid movement of people is imperative.
  3. Sector leaders will assist with building evacuation and follow Sector Leader Evacuation Procedures. If safety permits, close doors to evacuated rooms and leave the lights on.
  4. Avoid panic; walk, do not run, when exiting.
  5. Take the most direct route to the nearest designated safe area. Do not stop for your valuables.
  6. Move any obstructions found in passageways or exits out of the exit path.
  7. Alert others around you. Assist with the evacuation of any handicapped individuals. If unable to assist a handicapped individual, stage the person in front of the elevators (Main Campus and City Center Campus). Advise the individual that you will notify rescue personnel of their location.
  8. Keep streets, fire lanes, hydrant areas and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and personnel.
  9. After exiting the building move away from the building to a designated safe area or any area as directed, to avoid danger and to allow room for emergency personnel and their equipment. Do not congregate outside exit doors.
  10. Conditions such as inclement weather may warrant evacuation to your vehicle so do not leave campus grounds as you may hinder access to emergency personnel and vehicles.
  11. Sector leaders will verify with their sector instructors the number of students present in their class. It is recommended that a headcount be taken at the beginning of each class, and that this number be given to the sector leader by each instructor if the situation warrants.
  12. Follow all police and fire department directives. Emergency response personnel, if on scene, must authorize the issuance of an "All Clear" notice before anyone can re-enter the building.
  13. The designated college official will relay any other action as directed by the on-scene fire or police personnel. If it is not possible to re-enter the building, notification of actions to be followed will be issued by the designated college official.
