Bomb Threats

A bomb threat is an allegation that an explosive device is located on the school premises. This threat may be made by telephone, in writing, e-mail, fax, or by first party verbal conversation with a school official or student. The only allegation necessary is that a bomb is on school premises.

The designated college official, with the assistance of the Campus Police Department and other local authorities, will determine a plan of action. A decision on whether or not to evacuate will be based on all available information received.

If You Find A Suspicious Package:

Immediately notify a CSO or the Campus Police Department at extension 2911 or call 911 from Grundy Education Center.

If A Bomb Threat is Received By Telephone:

• In a calm voice, try to obtain as much information as possible about the bomb and the caller and complete a Bomb Threat Report Form.
• If practical, do not hang up the phone. Have someone else alert the Campus Police Department or a CSO, and call 911 to report the threat using another phone.

If a Written Bomb Threat is Received:

• Immediately alert the Campus Police Department or a CSO.
• Avoid handling the threat as much as possible to allow for evidence processing.
• Keep track of the following information:

1. Who found the threat
2. Who was present when the threat was received
3. When it was found or delivered
4. Where the threat was found or how it was delivered
5. If anyone touched the threat
6. Have any previous threats been received?

If the Decision to Evacuate is Made:

• Do not activate the fire alarm system. Do not use portable radios near the building. Do not use cell phones.
• Begin Building Evacuation Procedures.
• Sector leaders will assist with building evacuation and follow Sector Leader Evacuation Procedures. If safety permits, close doors to evacuated rooms and leave the lights on.
