The Joliet Junior College Centennial Plaza
serves as a tribute to the people of the Joliet area
whose vision, hard work and commitment over the past 100 years has helped
make Joliet Junior College one of the region's leaders in higher
education.
The Centennial Plaza, sponsored by the
Joliet Junior College Foundation, is located at the entrance to
D-Building on the Main Campus (MAP)
at 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet, Illinois. The Centennial Plaza is
composed of 4,500 high quality street paving stones. Each paver
stone is approximately 9.5" in length, 6" in width, and 3" in thickness
and weighs 16 pounds. The 36 tons of paver stones which comprise the
plaza mall are designed to the highest standard of durability and
visual appeal. The paver stones are made of a fired and tumbled
composite mixture of concrete with bonded color additives. This
mixture and heating process results in each paver having its unique
coloration in various hues of red and gray. The engraving for the
stones is done by a sandblasting process with the resulting engraved work
being filled with a durable black epoxy filler to help the personalized
paver stone resist the effects of weathering and abrasion. |
