Kimberly Karlberg worked as a
loss prevention agent at a local department store, at the Burlington Northern
Santa Fe and Berwyn Police Departments, and on a white-collar crime prevention
project for WW Grainger, a Fortune 500 company. Now, she is an associate
professor and coordinator of law enforcement studies and programs at JJC.
Karlberg has been teaching college for eight years at CTU Online, Westwood
College (Woodridge, Schiller park, Calumet City), JJC (Social and Behavioral
Science Department) and now in Criminal Justice Programs ands Studies.
Her latest venture is a book that discusses police misconduct. Titled 25
Biggest Mistakes Law Enforcement Officers Make and How to Avoid Them, the
book, Karlberg said, can also double as a textbook for criminal justice
students.
I want readers to understand the devastating effects of police misconduct
and comprehend the right way to police our people, she said. We are not at war
with the public; we are here to serve and protect. We are in our social service
era of policing, an era which should cater to community health and communication
with our citizens.
Karlberg pointed to a recent statistic highlighting police civil suits in
regards to excessive force and brutality stating:
It costs the city of Chicago
approximately
$24 million a year in police misconduct lawsuits,
Ultimately, she hopes the book will supply officers
with a wealth of information to use on the job, along with the tools necessary
to deescalate situations they may face.
