The Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree will be awarded with the satisfactory completion of a prescribed curriculum. The Associate in Applied
Sciences degree is intended to prepare individuals for employment in a specific field. The Illinois Community College Board has prescribed that each
associate degree curriculum shall include a specific general education component consisting of coursework in communications, arts and humanities,
social and behavioral sciences, and mathematics and sciences.
Within these parameters, the Associate in Applied Sciences degree must represent at least 15 semester hours of course work in general education. The
general education requirements for an A.A.S. degree at Joliet Junior College are listed below. Students should consult their major programs to determine
whether or not there are specific courses required by their major for each Group.
A minimum of 15 semester hours of general education courses from Groups I - V must be taken outside of the department of the major area of study.
(except for agriculture or horticulture students.) Students who major in one of the A.A.S. degree programs offered in Agriculture (AG 110, AG XXX, AG
150) or Horticulture (AG 310, AG 400, AG 600, AG 650, AG 700, AG 900) who begin their program of study in Fall 2003 will be required to complete 12 credits in
integrated general education coursework. Students who begin their program of study in Fall 2004 will be required to complete 15 credits in integrated
general education coursework. Integrated courses are designated by the double asterisks (**). Since this list is in the process of being expanded, check
with the Agriculture/ Horticulture/Vet Tech office for the most updated list of courses which satisfy this requirement.
