The Program

The Theatre program offers a wide variety of courses and activities.  In addition to taking courses in acting, oral interpretation, directing, theatre appreciation, theatre practicum, and technical theatre, you'll have opportunities to act, build, direct, design, and produce both main stage and studio productions. You'll also participate in workshops with visiting professionals. But your learning won't be limited to campus events. Theatre students at JJC have frequent opportunities to attend professional theatre productions in Chicago, and attend state and regional theatre conferences throughout the Midwest.

You'll have the chance to help create a season of five main stage productions each year. You'll also have the chance to work on scenes and one-act plays in acting and directing class and participate in public readings of both existing and original scripts.

Special Features:

  • Discounted tickets for professional theatre productions in the Chicago area;
  • Participation in the Illinois Theatre Association Undergraduate Theatre Festival;
  • Professionally led workshops in such areas as: stage combat, Shakespeare, career opportunities, and union membership;
  • Opportunities to participate in an annual touring children's theatre production.

The JC Players

This club is open to all students interested in theatre.  Members participate in JJC productions and attend off-campus performances and conferences. The Players engage in a variety of social activities and honor the season's outstanding accomplishments at an annual awards banquet.

Delta Psi Omega

Outstanding students are eligible for membership in this national theatre honor society.  The JC Players award annual scholarships to incoming freshmen and continuing students with theatre majors or minors.  For applications, contact Nicki Blowers at extension 2200.  Students in need of additional financial assistance should contact the Financial Aid Office at 815-280-2528.

Career Outlook

Theatre training provides students with poise, self-confidence and the communication skills necessary for success in any career. According to the U.S. Department of Labor's statistics, the continued expansion of cable and satellite television, the film industry, and other media outlets, should keep demand for those with theatre experience steady through the next decade.
