The Curriculum
The Fine Arts
department at Joliet Junior College offers a variety of courses and activities in speech, including oral interpretation, argument, and debate. The
Speech program stresses cooperative learning, small group activities, computer-assisted instruction and multimedia instruction to help the student better understand the principles of speech. The speech faculty is consistently developing new courses and programs to better serve JJC students.
Special Features
The Speech Team is open to all JJC students, regardless of
major. Members represent JJC at intercollegiate speech tournaments on the
regional and sometimes national level. Speech competition not only offers
opportunities to sharpen valuable communication skills, but students may also
receive college credit for their participation. Team members may compete in
interpretive events (poetry, prose, drama, dramatic duo, program oral
interpretation, and readers theater), public address (informative speaking,
persuasive speaking, communication analysis, and speaking to entertain),
limited preparation events (impromptu speaking and extemporaneous speaking),
and/or parliamentary style debate. The Speech Team competes in approximately
six tournaments per year.
Speaking Center
The Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Department opened its Speaking Center
in February 2006. Located in K-2004, the center offers students the
opportunity to videotape their speeches for
self-evaluation. Students can also visit the Center for brainstorming
sessions and topic selection, delivery practice, PowerPoint training and much
more. In fact, help is available with the entire process of putting together
an oral presentation, including research and writing. All tutoring at the
Center is offered free of charge. Staffed by a degreed professional the
Center is a rich resource for anyone seeking to improve their public speaking
skills. If you have any questions, please contact Lori Schahrer at
815-280-2339.
