Andrew M. Simco received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, where he was a pupil of
James Preiss and Fred D. Hinger. After graduation, Mr. Simco free-lanced in New York City for several seasons before becoming principal
timpanist of the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Albany, New York and principal percussionist of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. From 1980 until 1983, he served as Adjunct Instructor of Percussion at the University of Evansville and Artist-In-Residence for the Evansville-Vanderburgh School System. During this period, he also held the position of timpanist with both the Evansville Philharmonic and Owensboro Symphony Orchestras. In 1983 he was appointed solo timpanist of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in Oslo, Norway. He held this position until he returned to the United States in 1998. During his years in Norway, Mr. Simco taught applied percussion and percussion ensemble for the Oslo City School System and coached the percussion section of the Norwegian Youth Symphony. He also served for a year as guest lecturer at the Norwegian State Music Academy. Since his return from Norway, Mr. Simco has served as timpanist for the Des Moines Metro Opera in Indianola, Iowa and has appeared with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and the Northwest Indiana Symphony. He has held master classes at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, as well as Penn State University and the Manhattan School of Music. In addition to his work with the Des Moines Metro Opera, Mr. Simco currently serves as timpanist of the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra and was recently appointed timpanist of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. |
