JJC Interior Design Students Work on 2005 Showcase Home to Benefit Charity

After 150 hours of hard work by Joliet Junior College interior design students, the nanny’s quarters at 620 N. Euclid, Oak Park, Illinois are fit for a queen. As part of the 34th annual American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) – Oak Park/River Forest Infant Welfare Society Showcase Home, JJC students worked with Carson Pirie Scott designer Sal LaPorta and Barbara Pergande, JJC Interior Design program coordinator, to conceptualize and design the nanny’s bedroom, sitting area, bathroom, and hallway.

This was the third year JJC worked with Carson’s on a showcase home. Once Mr. LaPorta was awarded the privilege to design the nanny’s quarters, JJC internship students took part in a multifaceted process that included the selection of furniture, materials, and finishes for the rooms. Presentation boards were assembled and reviewed by the ASID committee before work commenced.

Students gained experience working in a team environment, which is something they do not often do in the classroom,” Ms. Pergande said. “Working with different personalities and being on a tight schedule were good experiences. When working with Carson Pirie Scott, the students were able to learn about different manufacturer lines of furniture and to live within a project's restrictions.”

The following students participated in the project: Susan Becker (Lockport), Chris Beele (Homewood), Mary Beth DiMayo (Homer Township), Judy Lape (Peotone), Angela Smith (Joliet), and Sherry Varner (Joliet).

All proceeds from the showcase go to the Oak Park/River Forest Infant Welfare Society, which benefits children that have medical problems.
