Gisele Atterberry, Associate Professor of Art

  • Co-sponsored with Meaghan Callan ceramicist and printmaker Kurt Webb in offering illustrated discussions of his recent work. Presentations held on April 15, 2008.
  • Attended the Slavery, and Abolition Conference at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, November 2007.
  • Co-organized with Meaghan Callan a field trip for faculty and art students to the Milwaukee Art Museum and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Wingspread in Racine, WI, October 2007.
  • Participated in the ICISP in the 2007-2008 Faculty/Administrator Exchange with Dr. Nele Hacklander of the University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland in Basel.
  • Attended the Experiential Knowledge Conference at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, England, June 2007.
  • Led a tour of the Robert Allerton house and ground for participants in the Digital Humanities 2007 Conference at the University of Illinois, June 2007.

Al Golden, Speech Faculty

  • Wrote the test bank for a new introductory communication textbook to be published by Bedford St. Martins Press, entitled Real Communication. The textbook is co-authored by Dan O’Hair and Mary Wiemann and is planned for publication in late 2008.
  • Took the Forensics Team to the College of Lake County Holiday Classic Tournament where Kayla Yost finished sixth in the Poetry event.
  • AAttended the National Communication Association Annual Convention in Chicago, November 2007.

Debbie Cygnar, Professor, Fashion Merchandising

  • Supervised Fashion Merchandising students who submitted two gown entries for the Fashion Group International Career Day. Submissions are made by all colleges and universities which have Fashion Design. Elena Catoiu’s gown was accepted into the finals. The competition was held in November 2007.
  • Was featured on the WJOL Morning Show and spoke about the Joliet Junior College Fashion Merchandising program, May 2007.

Thomas Liley, Professor of Music

  • Presented a recital and a lecture at the University of South Carolina, April 16-19, 2008.
  • Presented with a guest artist string quartet a faculty recital of music for saxophone and strings as part of the Musica Viva Series, March 9, 2008.
  • Presented a recital and gave a lecture at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. These were part of the United States Navy Band’s 31st International Saxophone Symposium held on January 18 and 19, 2008.
  • Served as a judge for the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, held at Lewis University, December 2007.
  • Was at the Sichuan Central Conservatory of Music in Chengdu, China for two weeks, where he performed a recital, presented three master classes, taught twenty students, and met with the Sichuan Saxophonists Association, November 2007.
  • Presented a lecture and performed at an international saxophone master class at the University of Minnesota on October 26 and 27, 2007.
  • Presented a faculty recital at Joliet Junior College, October 21, 2007.
  • Wrote an article about the history of the World Saxophone Congress at the request of the Saxophone Association of Thailand, October 2007.
  • Wrote a foreword for a new edition of the Rapsodie for orchestra and saxophone and orchestra by Claude Debussy, to be published by MMB Music of St. Louis.
  • Received a grant from the JJC Faculty Development Committee to fund a performance and lecture at the University of South Carolina in April 2008.
  • Presented a recital and taught at a five-day workshop at the Shell Lake Arts Center in northern Wisconsin, August 2007.
  • Wrote pedagogical article on the subject of vibrato was published by Clarinet and Saxophone of Great Britain, July 2007.
  • Appeared as soloist with the Wheaton Symphony Orchestra, June 2007.
  • Presented a recital for the Naperville Music Teachers Association annual luncheon, May 2007.

Sue Malmberg, Professor of Music and Music Coordinator

  • Music Director and Play Accompanist for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which was presented February 28-29 and March 1-2, 2008.
  • Attended the Association of Schools of Music Annual Convention. The entire convention was invited to a special performance given at the Mormon Tabernacle by the University of Utah and Brigham Young University choral and orchestral programs, November 2007.
  • Attended the Association of Illinois Music Schools Annual Meeting. Served as the Junior College Representative to the Board of AIMS, hosted a breakfast for all of the junior college faculty, and led a roundtable discussion of several topics, October 2007.

Joe Milosevich, Professor, Art; Art Gallery Director

  • Presented in a group exhibit entitled, UMM Studio Art Faculty - Past and Present. Exhibit held in the Humanities Fine Arts Gallery at the University of Minnesota, Morris, MN, January 24 through March 14, 2008.
  • Reported that Joliet Junior College had the most entries at the 2008 Illinois Community College Juried Art Exhibition and received four of the ten merit awards. The exhibit was held in the Visual Arts Gallery at Governors State University, February-March, 2008.
  • Presented a gallery exhibition and gave a gallery lecture entitled, The Collected Object, a one person exhibition of recent assemblages. The exhibit and lecture were given at the Chapman Gallery at Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, February 2008.
  • Participated in an exhibit exchange with Black Hills State University, Spearfish, SD. The exhibit was entitled, Baker’s Dozen and consisted of 13 paintings from JJC art students. The exhibit took place February 19 through March 14, 2008.
  • Was the juror and presented a critique for the Eighth Annual Juried Fall Art Exhibit at the Gretchen Carlton Art Gallery in Kankakee, October 2007.
  • Presented a two-person exhibit entitled Reclaiming the Artful Object: A Collaborative Investigation into the Craft of Art and the Art o f Craft. The exhibit was held at Joliet Junior College, October 3-26 2007.
  • Was the juror for the 8th Annual Juried Fall Art Exhibit held at the Gretchen Charlton Art Gallery at Provena Heritage Village, Kankakee, IL, September 27 through October 26, 2007.
  • Works entitled, Reclaiming the Spiritual Object, Two Person Exhibition featuring Joe B. Milosevich and James R. White were on display at the Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery at Moraine Valley College, August 15-September 24, 2007.

  • Announced that Trombone student, William Cooper, through his audition, was awarded the top seat in the honors orchestra at the Illinois Music Educators Association Festival held in Peoria, IL., January 30-February 3, 2008.

Barb Pergande, Professor of Interior Design and Interior Design Coordinator

  • Gave a presentation on the Joliet Junior College Interior Design program and the Illinois State Licensing for Interior Designers at the Joliet Junior College High School Counselors Breakfast, March 7, 2008..
  • Updated the articulation between Joliet Junior College Interior Design program and the Illinois Institute of Art (IIA). Our school has had this IIA articulation for seven years and enables our interior design students to transfer all their interior design courses to IIA and begin their junior year in pursuit of a BA degree in Interior Design. IIA is a Foundation for Interior Design Education and Research accredited program.
  • Attended the annual A.S.I.D. Design Summit at the Merchandise Mart to view the JJC Interior Student projects that were on display, February 28, 2008.
  • Coordinated with Sal LaPorta, Interior Designer for Carson Pirie Scott, on the design of two rooms for the Cheney Mansion showcase home in Oak Park, IL. They were assisted by interior design students. The event was held from September 9-30, 2007.

Steve Sherrell, Professor of Art

  • Is a member of the Collective 33, a co-operative gallery in the Bridgeport neighborhood in Chicago. The Collective was slated to move from its present location to a new one when the Zhou Brothers, an internationally famous artist family, invited them back to their Art Center (Zhou B. Art Center) and built a new space in the center. They opened a member show with 15 new members on April 21. Among the new members are faculty from at least 5 Colleges and 2 high schools, many of which are alumni from JJC.
  • An exhibition of paintings for the Imagine Foundation were on display at their site in Jacksonville, IL, February 2008.
  • Works were on display at the Old Town Art Center through the Mythopian Group. The exhibit was entitled, Works On Paper, September 9 through October 4, 2007.

Philip Spencer, Associate Professor of Music

  • Took twenty students from JJC choirs on a five-day performance tour to Washington, D.C. to sing the Faure “Requiem” with other choirs from across the country at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Memorial Day Weekend, May 2008.
  • In 2007 was commissioned to compose a choral work, Psalm of Wonder, to honor the Choral Director of Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn. The piece was the Finale, sung by all four choirs, of the Spring Concert on March 17, 2008. Mr. Spencer was introduced and asked to speak about the work.
  • Attended the 2008 Southwestern Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association, Kansas City, Missouri, February 2008,
  • Presented an organ recital for the Bach Vesper Series at the Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, IL, October 2007.
  • As founding conductor of the Lutheran Youth Choir of North America, toured to Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia with 21 students, July 2007.
  • Awarded first prize, Roger Wagner Center for Choral Studies 2007 International Choral Composition, Competition, California State University, held in Los Angeles, July 2007.

Jim White, Assistant Professor of Art

  • Works were on display at the Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery located at Moraine Valley Community College, August 15 through September 24, 2007.
  • Presented a two-person exhibit entitled Reclaiming the Artful Object: A Collaborative Investigation into the Craft of Art and the Art of Craft. The exhibit was held at Joliet Junior College, October 3-26 2007.
  • Works were display:
    • Feats of Clay XX Exhibition, Lincoln Arts, Culture Foundation, Lincoln, CA, from April 28 through May 27, 2007.
    • Jersey Shore Clay Nationals, Mt. Burton Gallery, Surf City, NJ, from May 26 through June 2007.
    • Reclaiming the Spiritual Object, Two Person Exhibition featuring Joe B. Milosevich and James R. White at the Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery at Moraine Valley College, August 15-September 24, 2007.
