Developmental Education


Developmental courses in reading and writing are offered.  Placement is determined by scores on the COMPASS reading and writing exams.  Developmental courses are not intended for transfer.  Students must earn a “C” or better to proceed to the next required course.  Courses offered are listed below.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

English 096:  Integrating College Reading and Writing.  A holistic, team-taught course designed to develop critical thinking skills and written responses to current cross-disciplinary materials showing the integration of reading and writing in college level course work.  Placement is based on a specific band of both COMPASS reading and writing scores or an “A” in English 098 and English 020.

English 098:  Fundamentals of English.  Designed to offer practice in the fundamentals of written expression.  This course emphasizes effective sentence writing leading to paragraph skills.

English 099:  Fundamentals of Writing.  Designed to offer practice in the essential principles of effective written expression:  sentence skills, unity, support, and coherence.  This course emphasizes effective paragraph writing, pre-writing techniques, and essay development.

English 020:  College Reading.  Designed to promote success in college reading by increasing efficiency in textbook and learning strategies, by improving reading rate, expanding vocabulary, and improving ability to construct meaning through direct instruction in those areas.  

English 021:  College Reading II.  Designed to promote success in college reading by reviewing and learning strategies, developing proficiency in recognizing and applying patterns of organization to college text materials, and increasing vocabulary knowledge and strategies.
