COMPASS Testing

Students wishing to enroll in composition and foreign language courses must first complete the COMPASS placement tests in reading and writing. The COMPASS test is a computer-based program offered on the JJC Main Campus and at selected off-site locations.  Students taking the COMPASS test receive immediate information on appropriate course placement and may then register for courses.

Complete information on testing times and requirements may be accessed through the Admissions Office, ext. 2231, or the Academic Skills Center, ext. 2284. Presently, the COMPASS test is offered at the Main Campus Academic Skills Center (J-2033) on Monday through Thursday between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., on Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and on Saturday at either 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. Summer hours may vary.

Because a minimum of three hours is provided for students to complete the exam, students must arrive by the above times. They also must know their Social Security number and bring a piece of photo identification.  Furthermore, no dictionaries or calculators are allowed.

After receiving their scores, students may re-take the COMPASS test one time as long as they have not already enrolled in an English class. The re-take fee is $10 but will be waived if students take a free training sequence in the Skills Enhancement Learning Lab.  Note again, however, that the COMPASS test cannot be re-taken if a student is already enrolled in an English class.

Some helpful tips for taking the COMPASS test:

1.            Read the directions carefully.

2.            Do not rush.  The COMPASS is not a timed test; you may take as long as you need.  A few extra minutes of concentration now may result in a higher score and a higher course placement.

3.            Use the “S” key to go back and forth between the passages and the questions.  You may look at either the passage or the questions as many times as necessary.

4.             When you answer “Y,” you will not be able to change your answer.  Be certain you are satisfied with your choice of answers before pressing the “Y” key.

5.             Again, do not rush.  This test is not timed.
