An open house information session will be available in Fall 2008 for the Medical Assistant Training Program.
The Medical Assistant Training Program offered through Joliet Junior College is a training program focusing on the practical skills
necessary for employment. Students completing this program will have attained, through lecture, demonstration, lab, and clinical experience, all the
necessary skills for entry level placement as a Medical Assistant.
Description of Profession
Medical assisting is one of the most versatile healthcare professions that individuals can choose requiring a relatively short training period. Both
men and women can be equally successful in completion of training and finding employment as a medical assistant.
Medical Assistants are multi-skilled allied health professionals specifically trained to work in ambulatory settings, such as physicians’ offices,
clinics, and group practices, performing administrative and clinical procedures. The duties of the medical assistant will vary depending on individual
employment circumstances such as the size of the facility/clinic and the number of resident physicians. Administrative duties include patient
reception, correspondence, billing, coding and insurance forms – among others as required by the office. Clinical duties could include taking and
recording patient vital signs, performing diagnostic tests such as electrocardiograms, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing
phlebotomy, administering injections, and preparing the patient for examination and assisting with procedures performed by the physician.
