Building Bridges:
Pre-Apprenticeship Project

A cooperative pre-apprenticeship program with the Chicago Interfaith Committee on Worker Issues, St. John M.B. Church and Joliet Junior College Division of Adult and Family Services provides a comprehensive basic skills review with a focus on math, field trips, on site visits and mentors are provided.  Assistance is provided and participation in gaining acceptance into desired apprenticeship programs.

Building Bridges has been particularly successful with apprenticeship programs for electricians, carpenters, laborers and sheet metal workers.  Started in 1999, Building Bridges goal is to help provide opportunities in the building trades unions for minorities. This project is designed to bridge the gap between those minorities trying to pursue these opportunities and the union apprentice programs entry  and on-going  training requirements.
