Group of business people in a meeting

Training

The SBDC conducts nearly 40 seminars and workshops throughout the year that address topics important to all business owners. Approximately half our offerings are directed to those people at the start-up stage of business. These range from a one-night "reality check" on starting a business to more extensive sessions on business fundamentals, feasibility studies, business acquisition and franchise purchases. The balance of our programming is designed for established businesses and focuses on topics of marketing, finance, accounting, taxation and many "industry specific" issues.

All seminars are direct, to-the-point and factual. Instructors are small-business owners and professionals in their respective fields, ensuring that the information provided is timely, relevant and immediately applicable in a real-world environment. Classes range in duration from one to multiple sessions, and tuition varies with duration and topic.

Counseling

The SBDC provides one-on-one counseling services to new and existing businesses at no charge. We will review business plans and discuss financing options, bank loans, SBA and state-backed loan programs, marketing, management and other topics of concern to our business clients. Counseling sessions are by appointment only; business plans, financial statements or other materials relating to the issue of discussions may be required prior to the meeting.

The SBDC also hosts and takes appointments for the Fox Valley Chapter of S.C.O.R.E. (Service Corps of Retired Executives). S.C.O.R.E. provides free, confidential business counseling or coaching to anyone who is operating a small business or thinking about starting one. A preliminary business plan draft, relevant supporting information and/or significant questions on the topic to be discussed, and/or attendance at a SCORE or SBDC Before You Start Your Business program are strongly recommend prior to a SCORE counseling session.

Consulting

For companies that require specialized attention, the SBDC can act as a referral source for a variety of specialized professionals and consultants. Many provide free or low-cost initial consultation meetings. Areas of expertise include business plan development, cash flow analysis, business valuation modeling, marketing plan development, database searches for financing sources, mailing lists and more. We draw on the expertise of SBDC staff members, college faculty and business professionals who have agreed to consult with SBDC clients.

To begin this process, arrange an appointment with an SBDC staff member to determine your needs and the type of expertise required. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact our offices at (815) 280-1400.
